there's a new(er) air and space museum close to the airport, not in downtown dc, def. worth the visit if you like aviation.. they've got a blackbird, one of the shuttles, think Enterprise, and about a hundred planes from various time periods. Our tour guide was also very good (free tour, just wait till they announce one).

most of the museums are worth visiting, the national archives is interresting

Holocaust is pretty freaky, especially the shoe exhibit so mentally prepare yourself for the worst if u go there.... On a fun note, go to Dream I love that place. Also go to Potomac Mills and Georgetown if you can and/or like to shop. Stay away from the PG places

Agree.
Downtown Bethesda, MD is pretty cool.

Just stay out of North East DC and you'll be fine.
don't go past 6 blocks north of the Capitol building (H St.) unless you are west of 6th st--just a rough estimate.

Alot of tourist try to go to "chinatown" but don't waste your time it's pathetic.

I see your in aerospace so go to this space museum, after you visit the National Air Museum on the Mall.
http://www.nasm.si.edu/museum/udvarhazy/
as panthersny said.

As skyfallen said, you should check out the Aquarium in Baltimore--if you can.

Which way are you looking at the Capital because that doesn't make any sense! The area around the Capital is extremely nice. You can go down Penn or Mass Ave. and still find awesome restaurants but your street says you are in SE. Same thing if you go North of H Street. North East D.C. Isn't that bad. Now the further you get into SE it gets pretty trashy and can get dangerous. But fuck its a big City.

dc has tons of stuff to do:

my fav museum is the nat. air and space. i could spend hours there.
college park aviation museum
holocaust as mentioned above
smithsonian museums
renwick gallery
corcoran gallery of art
signal66 (different types of stuff...)
sackler gallery
national gallery of art
hirshhorn
naitonal zoo
national arboreteum
monuments and federal buildings if you are into that
colonial williamsburg is like 2.5 hours away from there if you want a day trip
just walk up and down the mall - a lot of the museums and stuff to see are right in there.

Theres this great hole in the wall in Chinatown called Chinatown Express. They make their own noodles. The fried noodles (lo mein) are great.

http://cuveeamericain.blogspot.com/2005/12/chinatown-express-washington-dc.html

Also, Clyde's in Georgetown was great. The Guiness Beef Stew kicks ass. Also, the Capitol City Brewing Company is one of my favorites. Gotta hit up Chipotle too.

Wrong. First of all I said CAPITOL Building, the area near the CAPITOL-not capital. And I did not say that the area near the capitol is bad. I said don't go too far north!

If you don't believe me that's fine. It's clear you haven't been here much. I live here, I think I know what I am talking about. I was not talking about the SE intersection of H&6. Clearly, you don't realize that there are 4 intersections matching the description of D&4. One in NW,NE,SW, and SE.

So specifically I meant 6th st NW and H st NW. Go ahead and walk up North Capitol St. NE, and tell me how you like it--if you make it back. haha! The crime in the NE is the worst. 3 murders there a day ago and that's kinda typical. It's mostly black on black though, cause that whole area is all ghetto.

this crime spills over in MD. PG county is ghetto as hell. Just look at the crime statistics for the University of Maryland http://www.umdps.umd.edu/umdps_incident_log.cfm .
It's common for people to get car jacked/robbed at gun point in the middle of the day.

The Smithsonian Museum of Natural History is really cool.
I would suggest checking the hours of all the places you want to go before you actually go. I've been to DC twice, and both times managed to find something awesome fifteen minutes before it closed.

Uh, no...certain parts of the city are worse than others, but I think if you avoid the area east of the Anacostia, you'll be fine.

There's a lot of great stuff to do in DC, just depending on what your interest is. Any particular thing that you're interested in seeing? I recommend checking out the City Paper or DCist for events going on in the area.

The green line has its jewels...Columbia Heights is about the same distance to the nightlife on 18th St. as the Woodley Park Metro stop. And, of course, who could forget about Ben's Chilli Bowl off the U St./Cardozo stop..

Yum....Ben's.... ::drool::

Quote :
"At the peak of the violent crime wave, in the early 1990s, Washington DC was known as the murder capital. The number of homicides peaked in 1991, with 482 in that year. Despite the high rate of crime, violence was not evenly distributed across the city, but rather was primarily concentrated in specific neighborhoods, located east of Rock Creek Park. These areas included Columbia Heights, Adams Morgan, Logan Circle, Shaw, Le Droit Park and the East End of Downtown (Chinatown), all located to the north of the National Mall. As recently as 2001, services such as cat sitters would not go east of 16th Street, into these neighborhoods due to the prevalence of violent crime. High rates of crime have also plagued substantial portions of Northeast Washington, including the Trinidad neighborhood, as well as most of the neighborhoods located east of the Anacostia River, in Southeast Washington.

The tide has since turned as gentrification is sweeping eastward across the District and has transformed the neighborhoods of Adams Morgan, Logan Circle, Columbia Heights, and the East End of Downtown (Chinatown). In the past ten years, the number of homicides has been halved, from 399 in 1994 to 198 in 2004. The gentrification of these neighborhoods was, in part, spurred by the extension of Metrorail's Green Line to the Shaw, U Street, Columbia Heights, and Petworth neighborhoods, during the late 1990s. The revitalization efforts began, first in the Adams Morgan and Logan Circle areas, and more recently in Columbia Heights. In 2005, gentrification is now beginning to reach Shaw, Le Droit Park, Petworth, Bloomingdale, Eckington, as well as Trinidad. The transformation of the Downtown/Chinatown areas into clean, safe areas was aided by the construction of the MCI Center, which opened in 1997, and the new Washington Convention Center that opened in 2004 at Mount Vernon Square. As a result of the revitalization efforts, the home values in these neighborhoods have skyrocketed, while the violent crime rates have plummeted.

Despite this gentrification, the Sursum Corda public housing project, located along North Capitol Street between K and M Streets, bordering the Downtown/Chinatown and Le Droit Park neighborhoods, has remained a magnet for drug dealers and crime. However, since a 14-year girl was murdered here in the beginning of 2004, the DC government has begun to tackle this hotspot. A plan is in the works to demolish the public housing and replace it with mixed-income housing. Helping to spur development in this area north of Union Station, is the New York Avenue metrorail station that opened in November 2004, and related economic development/construction projects.

It is advisable for visitors to Washington to acquaint themselves with the neighborhoods of the city and plan their visits accordingly, the same care that one would pay when visiting any major city is recommended. Tourist advice ("conventional wisdom") generally recommends that visitors do not venture east of the U.S. Capitol. An exception to that is the Historic Capitol Hill neighborhood, located directly to the east of the U.S. Capitol Building. There are many attractions in the Eastern half of the city, including the historic Eastern Market (the largest continually operated public market in the city) and the National Arboretum on New York Avenue. The visitor will also find countless historic residential neighborhoods in the Eastern half of the city. The "common" tourist advise to remain west of the U.S. Capitol is seen by some locals as racially motivated, since most of the District's white residents live west of the U.S. Capitol and most of the property related crime also occurs West of the U.S. Capitol. As for any major city, it is nonetheless advisable to use common sense and not be out alone at late hours of the night, etc.

An added impact of this wave of gentrification is that a substantial amount of violent crime has spilled across the District's eastern boundaries into Prince George's County, Maryland. In 2004, Prince George's County experienced 148 homicides, up from 128 in 2003. As of mid-March 2005, the suburban county had already had 33 homicides for the year. That level of violence contrasts with the other major counties surrounding Washington, including Montgomery County, Maryland which had 17 homicides for 2004, and Fairfax County, Virginia, with 10 homicides in 2004."

http://experts.about.com/e/w/wa/Washington,_D.C..htm

might sound racist but it's the truth.

Shit, if you want to avoid high crime all together, then I'd say just don't come to DC at all...like I said, if you're careful about your surroundings, you should be fine anywhere west of the Anacostia.

I work near Columbia Heights and Adams Morgan, live in NE DC and I've never had much problem. I get hit up for money, of course, but hell...that happens in every big city (and it happened to me a few times on Hillsborough St.).

Yeah, I go to Adams Morgan a lot and Columbia heights is not bad.

I am not trying to say that you are going to robed every time you go there. Yeah, be aware of your surroundings and you will probably be fine. I was responding to a question from a tourist, and so I directed him to steer clear of the ghetto. Why would he want to go there anyway--oh yeah exploring poverty is sooo much fun.

Look, you can argue all you want but the fact is that NE is crime infested and ugly as hell. It makes my eyes sore just driving through there.

Parts are, but I wouldn't condemn the whole area. I live near a few universities, which are beautiful, so the landscaping and view from my perspective might not be representative of all of NE DC.
