some things are sports . . . others are just competitive eventsI would venture to say that if it has judges instead of officials, then it is a competitive event.

gosh sports are physical events, and are competativeand do not depend on how lucky you are or how good your tackle is
2/17/2006 9:36:10 PM
anything you have to practice at and you can win money at that requires physical aspects is a sport....I’m tired of stupid shits saying everything isn’t a sport.....if it isn’t a sport then why the fuck is it on a sports channel? So is poker a sport? Yes.....requires skill....and you win money.....If moving into your apartment had a 1 million dollar payday....it would have people training to win.....thus it becomes a sport[Edited on February 17, 2006 at 9:46 PM. ^^^^ by your reasoning the spelling bee is a sport, that is rediculoustheres a difference between sport and competition, sport requires vigorous physical activityone criteria can be, if you can play the entire game sitting down, then you're not playing a sport

Here's my theory...Sports involve either head-to-head competition (e.g. tennis) and/or physical contactOtherwise it's a hobby in my bookAnd golf is another example of a hobby and not a sport.

Football -> SportGolf -> SportCurling -> Sport/GamePoker -> GameChess -> GameFigure Skating -> Competitive EventDiving -> Competitive EventGymnastics -> Competitive EventFishing -> ActivityRacing -> DependsGolf, Football, Basketball, Running a race.. these are things which are sports. High degree of physical training is required, as well as a huge refinement of other skills. In addition, there is a quantitative result at the end which is generally concrete. A final score, the lowest time, ect. Poker is a game. No athletic skill is required. I compare it to chess, because like poker, no athletic skill is required. Curling falls in the grey area, because while it is mostly a game of skill, some physical activity is required. So I could see where some would want to say it's a sport. But it's also in the game category.Figure Skating, Gymnastics, Diving, ect... these are events which have judges. Yeah, it involves a huge amount of athletic ability and skill, but the results are open to interpretation. Sooo sorry, but I've got a hard time calling it a sport. Winners in sporting events are pretty inarguable. It's hard to argue that a soccer game didn't end 2-0. However, it's easy to argue how well a certain dive was pulled off. The Russian judge gave that shit a 4 bitches. Fishing, in my opinion, is a sub-category of Hunting. Hunting is an Activity, not a sport. Yeah, to pull up more fish than Joe Schmoe you've gotta know a little bit about what you're after. Where they swim, at what depth, what they like to eat, ect. However, there are too many variables to accurately compete and declare a supreme fisherman. Not saying it's not physically demanding, but it's just not something that you can quantify accurately. So you caught more fish than that dude in the next boat over. Grats, you got lucky. Racing... yeah. A race is a sporting competiton, but I tend to lean the way of saying it's a sport for living creatures that are directly competing. Horse racing is a sport, but for the horses. Dog racing is a sport, but for the dogs. 6 niggas from Africa running the 5k, yeah that's a sport for the niggas from Africa. It's not a sport for the jockeys. Compared to the work the horse is doing, they aren't doing squat. Auto racing a sport? Eeeh... not really. More like a competiton. Yeah, quantifiable result.. but the physical training required pales in comparison to what actual athletes are required to undergo in order to compete.

Some types of fishing require intense physical activity. Some types of fishing involves competition with other fisherman and quantifiable results ending in a definite winner.Sitting on a bank fishing with a cane pole = not a sport1 million dollar sportfishing tournament = sport
