When you have:- 2 raptors in a RAID 0- SLI Video Cards that cost more than my entire computer- Gay modded cases with gayer lights- Any cpu that is over the price/performance sweet spot, i.e. buying 700$ processors to get another 200 mhz over the 300$ one- If you have any of the above AND you use mommy and daddy's money - that is quadruple bonus geek points
2/6/2006 10:41:44 AM

Meet my end tables. The (unfortunately empty) shells of a Sun 4/470 server and its attendant Mass Storage Array. Functional and stylish. That drives that used to inhabit that array were beastly. Each was over a foot long and weighed probably 50 lbs. Capacity was 1 GB. [Edited on February 6, 2006 at 10:54 PM. Reason : eek! huge pics!]

Actually, upon photo inspection, it was 14 computers.
2/7/2006 4:21:30 PM
I've got a SS670MP, its the same form factor as that 470. I think Sun called it a "deskside"
2/7/2006 9:53:44 PM
Perhaps they recognized its end-table potential too, but didn't want to be so direct about it. Both the SS470 and the storage array were complete and powered up when I got them, but I just couldn't justify keeping the innards (dual 25-mhz TI processors on the 470 what what!).
2/7/2006 10:20:31 PM
^ yeah they are quite a beast. I also have a matching storage array, its been awhile since I looked at it but I think it is differential SCSI and accepts 5.25" full-height hard drives. did you remove your innards just for weight savings? Or did you replace w/ something else. My 670MP had 4 sparc processors, I think they were around 100mhz or so, and didn't have much cache. Memory is maxed out at 128MB. The 1200watt power supply hardly made it worth running, even to play with.

having a nicer speaker setup on your comp than on your tv is always a good, but easy measure. doubly true when they arent actual computer speakers.
2/7/2006 10:56:20 PM
- If you sound system of your computer is better than the one in your main room.... and you compare them often to show off.- If you have 3 computers at the same desk (2 Windows, 1 linux)... and they all work using the same keyboard and mouse. (http://synergy2.sourceforge.net/)- If the 5 books closest to your desk are about SQL, Cold Fusion, Cisco Firewalls, Crystal Reports and Baking Cookies for Dummies (don't ask). - You bought an X800XT All In Wonder because you wanted no video lag when pwning people. - You have a Steering wheel sitting on the side of your desk for easy access for use online.- You put nails into your nice desk to hang not 1 but 2 different sets of headphones for use. One for listening one for gaming (mic). - You can reach your DVD player, TV, All computers, Monitors and have a hidden stash of food within reach without having to move! (I want a mini fridge!).[Edited on February 8, 2006 at 7:29 AM. Reason : !]
