It bothers me when people say Duke/UNC is a bigger rivalry than NC State/UNC. I can see on a national scale why people would say this as ESPN always talks this up and so people that don't live here just take it as fact. Combine that with the HUGE amount of bandwagon fans both teams have and people just start to believe it as truth. But I just don't see it. Recently it's made sense because w/ Roy now at UNC, both basketball teams are playing great. But I mean both of their football teams (in general) are horrible and don't even catch 3 seconds of SportsCenter. I say that overall, and in the long haul, NC State/UNC is a bigger rivalry. I'm sure I'm biased as I go here, but I think over the history of the schools (like, when K and Roy leaves and their teams suck again), and especially when you take football into consideration, NC State vs. UNC is more meaningful.Give me some reasons either way and which rivalry you see as the most intense over history.

2/4/2006 4:52:59 PM
nobody cares about ncsu basketball outside of ncsu
2/4/2006 4:56:03 PM
I think I disagree a little bit....unc/duke, the fans hate each other more than they hate us....they like to act like we do not matter....until we beat them....then they hate it more....wow....complicated...I don't know
2/4/2006 4:56:18 PM
uhhh, UNC and Duke are more prominent schools nationwide than us by far, period.it is pretty stupid to think that NCSU/UNC is a rivalry to anyone but both of these schools
2/4/2006 4:57:22 PM
yeah...i'm a carolina fan and i absolutely hate duke....but even if i did not go here and unc lost to ncsu i would not get too upset about it. i would take it like losing to maryland or something...still not like it but shit, at least it's not duke
2/4/2006 4:58:19 PM
A lot of times ECU thinks they have a big rivalry with state....but do we care? think about it....
2/4/2006 5:01:20 PM
If we actually beat unc-brokeback hill every now and then the rivalry will heat up.I'll say this though...if there is one school that unc-brokeback hill hates losing to more than anybody else, it has to be State. I'd say that there's a lot of mutual respect between Duke and unc-brokeback hill, but with regards to State and unc-brokeback hill, there's just a natural dislike between the players and the coaches. Roy Williams hates State, the same for Bunting. They despise losing to us b/c they don't respect us, and that to me is what really makes the rivalry something special.[Edited on February 4, 2006 at 5:05 PM. Reason : more]

^ You're wrong snowman. Your coaches know what the deal is. Roy Williams goes out of his way to put down State. The same with Bunting. As Brendan Haywood once said, "I don't know why I hate State, I just do." Duke's and unc-brokeback hill's players hang out in the summer time and play together, but you will never see the same thing between the tarhole players and the State players. You can hear the hatred in Woody Durham's voice and in the players. They know what's up.

unc students obviously dont care about statethats why they go out of their way to try to come here and spray paint shitthats why their players mention the rivalry in the mediathats why state/unc games are always packed to the brim in both raleigh and ch
2/4/2006 5:10:29 PM
Even Duke alum/announcers like Jay Bilas and Mike Gminski say that the State/Carolina rivalry is bigger in the state of NC just because of the proximity of the fans and players. Roy Williams' father in law is a State grad. It's more of a hometown thing, even though as I said it would be bigger, especially in the eyes of the nation, if State could actually beat them every once in awhile.
2/4/2006 5:10:39 PM
^ have never heard such a thing

people that grew up in nc know the dealthere arent any duke fans that grow up in nc
2/4/2006 5:12:04 PM
I do believe that felton played in summer leagues with ncsu players. As for rivavlry i would say UNC/ DUKE is huge relative to NCSU/UNC. The schools are closer, have a cup designated for the number of wins in EVERY sport. If u ever go to a duke unc volleyball game or womens basketball game they are packed where as ncsu unc games are not unless it is mens basketball or football.

Back in the day UNC/State was bigger. Duke was an afterthought in college basketball until Kryzooski came along. Since he's been there, Duke/UNC have been top 5 in the country. State has been playing in the Les Robinson invitational and fighting for last place with Clemson. If State could ever get back on the National Scene and maintain it for years (And not lose to shitty teams like we tend to do... in other words become a perennial power like we once were), it'd be a horse of a different color and State/UNC will start to mean something again. Duke/UNC is bigger now only becuase of National Implicatons. State/UNC is a more natuaral rival and could once agian be just as big if we would actually start winning again. I don't know who people consider bigger, and frankly I don't care. It's the people that attend and attended the schools who decide who their rivals are. That's the reason I think and some others think we're more of a rival with ECU in football than Duke or Wake even though we play the latter two more.Yes, the media treats Duke-UNC like a big deal, and it is a big deal. But if the Cameron Crazies treated Carolina like they treat Clemson, in the end no one would care. That's why all the talk that Maryland is this awesome rival of Duke in basketball is foolish nonsense, cause Duke fans could care less about Maryland.[Edited on February 4, 2006 at 5:23 PM. UNC Students now don't care about NC State at all. Alumni who remember when we had a rivalry do. So basically, what PackBacker said

PackBacker just nailed my feelings about the whole thing.

2/4/2006 5:36:06 PM
Whenever we beat them, they don't care. Whenever they beat us, they come and paint "Not your rival" in our Tunnel. I just find it funny that it's because of UNC's failure that NC State came into existance.
2/4/2006 6:15:23 PM
someone should put that on the back of a shirt that says on the front, "NC State was created to correct the Chapel Hill mistake."

to me personally, the unc-state rivalry is more important than the dook rivalry right now. don't get me wrong, i hate dook with every fiber of my being, but i can count on one hand how many dook grads i know. i would bet a lot of people on here would have the same problem. i know a lot of state grads and students, however, so the back and forth shit talking keeps it real for me. if all of dook's fans weren't from new jersey or rednecks, it might be more special

^^ Your alma mater's gotta be #1. Otherwise you're bandwagon.^ word.
2/4/2006 6:39:17 PM
You guys are idiots, I was a Carolina fan for 18 years til I came here and I hated Duke like crazy, and I didn't give a shit about State, and niether did many Carolina fans I know. Here is how I can prove it too. At Carolina you get in a lottery for tickets to blocks of games, NC State is the same as every game, meaning it is in a block with all the rest, But Duke is it's own lottery. If that doesn't say who Carolina fans care more about I don't know what does.
2/4/2006 6:46:21 PM
Most UNC students really don't care about State and most are amused that NCSU students think there is a rivalry.Just ask them.
2/4/2006 6:47:43 PM
Acedotal evidence from your neck of the trailer park doesn't mean squat.
2/4/2006 6:48:16 PM
The more you profess that there is a UNC/NCSU rivalry, the more I think you're a dumbass.
2/4/2006 6:53:17 PM
You guys are focusing entirely too much on the "here and now". When Roy and K are gone and the programs fall, it's a different story.I'm taking about historically.
2/4/2006 6:55:12 PM
Why, if it isn't a rivalry now, who cares?
2/4/2006 6:56:06 PM
^ It is a rivalry now, it's just not as big currently b/c UNC & Duke are both pimpin' two of the greatest coaches we'll ever see coach.I bet in 74 and 83 this thread would be much different since it's focusing on the "here and now"[Edited on February 4, 2006 at 6:57 PM. Reason : .]

Rivalries do not come and go. No matter how shitty Duke and UNC get, their students will always care about beating the other when they play. You cannot say the same about NCSU/UNC...UNC students don't even care now.[Edited on February 4, 2006 at 7:00 PM. Reason : .]
2/4/2006 6:59:40 PM
I know, but this thread is in 06, sorry to tell ya. I'm not sure that their rivalry will fall off either. A great coach will take over UNC, and Dawkins will be just like K when he takes over, and if anyone didn't know, he is taking over.
2/4/2006 6:59:41 PM
I guess that's why I get phone calls and IMs galore everytime the tarholes beat State because they don't care. Brilliant.
2/4/2006 7:02:36 PM
Maybe they just like ragging on you.

2/4/2006 7:04:13 PM
I don't think it's much of a rivalry as it use to be. If you ever talk to an older generation from NCSU or UNC they consider it a rivalry, because in the seventies and early eighties it was a big rivalry. However the younger generation of UNC feel more rivaled with DUKE(basketball). Although, I do find it a bit amusing that a great deal of UNC students do say its not a rivalry, then after a football game our tunnel is somehow painted smurf blue.[Edited on February 4, 2006 at 7:05 PM. I didn't say it would be "the rivalry of the ACC".
2/4/2006 7:06:58 PM
Dick Vitale said in the late '90s that the State/Carolina rivalry was as big as Duke/Carolina. The focus now is Duke/Carolina especially because of Duke's dominance since Dean Smith retired but that doesn't mean that it will always stay that way.
2/4/2006 7:08:07 PM
Why the fuck are you people trying to argue with me. Ask UNC students who their rival is. If you prod them maybe they'll say "State too, I guess", but NONE of them are going to say NCSU first.
