I'm looking at getting a full-frame 9mm, but I don't really know what to look for.

What's the advantage of a metal frame as opposed to a plastic? (other than weight)

Also, what should I be paying?

Just bribe the guard with a Franklin or be someone they're not allowed to "profile."

I think its easier to zero back in on target with a heavier gun when shooting a practical course. the best thing to do is find a gun shop that has a range and try out different guns. Everyone has different oppinions on what is best. I prefer a sig to a glock any day. A 9mm is a light calibur though. you might want to move into a 40 or 45.

I'm going out to Davi's tomorrow to rent a couple guns to try out. I'm looking at buying a pistol sometime in the next 2 months, so I figure I'll go to the range a few times and try out a few and see what I like.

I'm wanting to look at a Springfield 1911, but most all of those models are 45cal which wont be as cheap to shoot as a 9mm. I know they make a 9mm version, and there's tons of other handguns out there.

Get a .40. It's a superior round to the .45. It has the same impact energy with better range and accuracy.

^9mm +P has muzzle energy comparable to .40S&W

You aren't going to notice any better accuracy or range with either.

people hate on the 9mm, but i'll tell you what...with good ammo (something like FailSafe bullets on a +P load), I'm just as confident of my ability to stop someone in his tracks with a 9mm as I am with my .45.

(when I had my P226, I had a 15 round mag, and kept it loaded with an alternating mix of 2 FailSafes followed by 1 FMJ, just in case there was some situation where I wasn't getting bullet penetration with the frangible rounds...the 3 round would get through)

Agreed. Amongst decent calibers, shot placement >>> caliber

we recently started carrying the P229 40 and are getting rid of the 92F except when traveling overseas(NATO rounds).

I prefer USPs, personally.

What kind of trigger are you looking for? SA? DA/SA? DAO full-stroke? DAO partial-stroke?

better break that habit if you ever get into the real deal

yeah, that's definitely a BIG factor in deciding which pistol to get.

and I don't really view Glock and Sig as all that comparable. They're very different in feel, and SIGs cost substantially more. Also, almost all SIGs are DA/SA, whereas Glocks are, well, kinda-sorta DAO.

Like I said, partial-stroke DAO.

I'd say it goes more like...

Glock
XD
Basic 1911s
SIG
USP ..."somewhat nice" 1911s go around here somewhere
Expensive stuff which you'd have to be nuts to use for carry anyway.

Oh yeah, I forgot about the P99s/SW99s.

I'd put them in somewhere below SIGs but above Glocks. I wish they made them with manual safeties. :-/

About the time that Daddy left to fight the big war
I saw my first pistol in the general store
In the general store, when I was thirteen
Thought it was the finest thing I ever had seen

So l asked if I could have one when I grew up
Mama dropped a dozen eggs, she really blew up
She really blew up and I didn't understand
Mama said the pistol is the devil's right hand
The devil's right hand, the devil's right hand
Mama said the pistol is the devil's right hand

My very first pistol was a cap and ball Colt
Shoot as fast as lightnin' but it loads a mite slow
Loads a mite slow and i soon found out
It can get you into trouble but it can't get you out
So then I went and bought myself a Colt 45
Called a peacemaker but I never knew why
Never knew why, I didn't understand
Cause Mama said the pistol is the devil's right hand
Never knew why, I didn't understand
Cause Mama said the pistol is the devil's right hand
The devil's right hand, the devil's right hand
Mama said the pistol is the devil's right hand

Well I get into a card game in a company town
Caught a miner cheating I shot the dog down
Shot the dog down, watched the dog fall
Never touched his holster, never had a chance to draw
The trial was in the morning and they drug me out of bed
Asked me how I pleaded, not guilty I said
Not guilty I said, you've got the wrong man
Nothing touched the trigger but the devil's right hand
Not guilty I said, you've got the wrong man
Nothing touched the trigger but the devil's right hand
the devil's right hand, the devil's right hand
Nothing touched the trigger but the devil's right hand
