I've never used Fedora Core 4. I used Suse linux, but never installed rpms from the command line, I just let Yast do it for me. Doesn't the Fedora project have a Wiki?

RPMs

Install a package
rpm –ivh packagename

upgrade a package
rpm –Uvh packagename

for the DVD, I'm not sure on FC4 but here are a few things to try.
cat /etc/fstab
mount
df -k

you should see your DVD drive mounted and its location. then just cd to that directory.

I would assume yast is like yum or apt or synaptic.. It's a package manager.

wiki, just google. It's a collection of pages with information.

if yum is installed I would learn to use it. One thing to remember is, whatever packet manager you use to install the software you'll have to use to upgrade or remove it. So my advice is, pick one packet manager and stick to it for all your installs if possible.

Plus yum, apt and the like will install the dependencies, which will save you a lot of hassel.

http://www.livna.org/
go there, follow the instructions on installing.. ( http://rpm.livna.org/configuration.html#Core4 )
livna will give you the files so you can play mp3's and other stuff they legally couldnt include..

"yum install yumex" if you want a gui for yum, bit like yast's installer

"yum install xine-skins" (it'll grab the rest of the dependencies for xine as well)
xine is a good dvd player.. gxine is a better interface for it..

if you're using Gnome or KDE you should beable to just double click any rpm file and it'll install it for you.. executing it from a terminal isnt really nessisary.. or if you download it with firefox (etc) just 'open' it..

Gnome or KDE also have the eqiv. of 'My Computer' on the desktop.. should beable to navigate a DVD-rom from there, unless you meant play it, which is what xine is for.. there really shouldnt be a need to mount it, as both KDE and Gnome should do it for you..
if nothin else run konqueror, check /media/ and see whats there

dweedle

did you get it installed? did you found out what a wiki is?

LOL

but for real its crazy. I'm a huge fan of yum (I hated RPM dependency-hell), so its kinda cool to see thread where its being talked about as a new thing.

yeah I hate that move. I don't know why they just didn't improve upon yum rather than make a whole new tool.

dnf? wtf?

# yum forever.
