I've found large career fairs to be a terrible place to find a job. Once things get hopping, it is way to loud to have any meaningful conversation. The noise makes it harder to approach people b/c you can't hear each other. However, give out your resume and you may have some luck. I had one offer through the career fair. The main reason you should go is to learn about the companies that hire people with your skills and figure out which ones you would like to work for.

..or to see who is giving away free stuff. ooo i may go see how it looks for that

I got my current job from the 2004 engineering career fair.

I'm going. Suprisingly, I got a call back 2 weeks ago from a company at the minority career fair, had an interview, and will probably accept if they give me an offer. At the time I felt going to that was a big waste, so maybe something even better will show up here.

I'm about to head over there in about 10-15 minutes, and i'm taking a shit ton of resumes, haha.Hopefully I can pull a few interviews/offers from this whole thing

Career Fairs suck, lolers[Edited on February 2, 2006 at 1:08 PM. Reason : helps if i could fucking spell career, lol]

And now I feel absolutely worthless, because I didn't get offered any interview slots, god damn it^^ And I didn't mean to say I would get an offer at the fair, I just meant by going I could get the ball rolling that would eventually lead to an offer, but after today and everyone just telling me to "check out their website", I don't think that's going to be happening any time soon[Edited on February 2, 2006 at 1:08 PM. Reason : .]

walk into a career fair with the right attitude and you can leave laughing and smiling after your resume was rejected on more than one occasion

2/2/2006 5:17:22 PM

socks? awesome
2/2/2006 5:31:58 PM
i saw leftyisreal at the career fair.there were hardly any companies there looking for people from my major so i ended up explaining to a lot of people what my major was and how i could fit into their company. a lot of the people were really nice and enthusiastic so that was nicethen there were the people who looked like they were tired of being there... i tried to avoid having to talk to them but sometimes you just couldn'tand then one guy pretty much made me not want to work at his company after he told me about the positions they had open. i got a coozie, some stickers, a pen, a clip, and some perfume. i wasn't really trying to accumulate too much stuff though because i didn't have anything to put it in

So is it one step above getting the "check out our website" treatment if they say that and give you their business card?
2/2/2006 5:41:57 PM
It just seemed like there were probably 2 or 3 that honestly didn't want me there, and gave me the "check our website" speech. There were others than seemed interested in me, but either they didn't know of any openings in the offices I wanted to work in, or they gave me tons of stuff and just said to go on the website and apply directly to certain jobs because it would speed up the process.I guess it just really hurt my confidence that no one wanted to set up an interview right away, and I don't know if that means I have little to no chance of scoring a job with any of these places.

^^not necessarily. apply apply apply. i know very qualified individuals who put out probably 75 resumes only to get maybe 2-3 callbacks. depends on the industry, the company, and the individual.make sure your resume is awesome. look decent when you go to these fairs. and then practice answering some common questions. remember tho, they are talking to 100's of people. you need to stand out. ive been looking for something better lately and even with an uber resume like mine, i only get about a 2% callback ratejust send out like 32423 a day
2/2/2006 5:59:21 PM
ahah who said i can't get a job?i didn't want a bag because i was told not to have a lot of stuff with me while talking to people so i had free hands to shake hands and to hand out resumes and to take notesbut i am mad i didn't pick up a pair of socks.. i saw them on the table and they were mightly tempting.
2/2/2006 5:59:35 PM
I wore the socks to practice tonight. Theyre smelly as hell.but really all of my clothes are. time for a beer and a /(in the) shower.
