A list of the vets are at the bottom of this page:
http://www.spcawake.org/spay.html

Anyone which vet I should use? An older thread recommends Glenwood Animal Hospital, but I'm looking for other ideas.

Also the animal is a 6 month old boxer mix, should I get the bloodwork? What about the after surgery pain meds? Seems like that shit would hurt and I would want the dog to chill out while he's recovering so it seems like it would be a good idea.

I'd say Glenwood.....The voucher takes care of the surgery.

Also recommended is bloodwork for around $45 and $45 for pain relief (usually 4 days worth of carprofen and an injection beforehand). Keep in mind pain medicine will not sedate the dog after the surgery, so they will need to be crateds, kept on the leash for a week or two. Anywho, give 'em a call: 783-7387.

If you are looking for a closer vet, try Oberlin (832-3107), it's a different location within the practice.

Also, your pet needs to be updated on rabies, neg stool check, bordetella, distemper-parvo and a heartworm antigen test is strongly recommended! Well, good luck.

i personally dont like glenwood or oberlin (owned by the same people) all that much. but im from Va so i cant really offer any suggestions. As far as bloodwork goes.....the Dr. should examine the dog before hand and a puppy of 6 month generally wouldnt require bldwk (they generally do that for older dogs to make sure then can handle the anesthesia). And pain meds...for a male neuter? nah. he'll be up and about next day and you'll have trouble keeping him still as he should. just discourage him from licking at the area and you should be good.

I used the one in Cary for my 2 cats. I was impressed by their competence and professionalism.

I don't recall using pain meds for my male dog. It's all external, so it really isn't that horrible.

im sure removing testicles does hurt....but it's nowhere near as invasive a procedure as spaying a female where everything is done internally... and if you can find a place that does laser surgery the recovery time is generally a great deal quicker than the "old fashioned" way..

Wrong. It's needs an antigen test after it is 6-8 months old. It also needs a direct blood smear to detect microfilaria in the blood stream.

the younger they are the less likely that pain meds are suggested. 6 months is still pretty young. They do give a nice dose to knock them out that is included in the surgery, and it usually takes quite awhile for them to wake up (depending on the dog as well). But, really, it's a waste because they bounce right back. Oh, and I usually do SNAPS... but you need a regular vet too, and none of the ones i know of are on that list

the vet i work for has always recommended a HW test at the 1 year shot mark. 1, because it takes 6 months for it (babies) to be detected in the bloodsteam and 2. in Va if an animal is more than a year old, it is illegal to sell HWP without a current HW test.

I use Ansede and I really like them. They are good with my kitten and always have done a good job. (I know other people that have used them as well.) When my kitten was fixed he had a very easy time with recovery. He was just old enough to be neutered and I think that was beneficial. Ansede does a good job of doing what you want, not pressuring you into extras, and they always keep in touch before and after appointments.

My regular vet is Oberlin
i take all 4 of my dogs there
they're great
I did have one of mine spayed at Glenwood - they were great as well.

your best bet is to ask the vet what he/she recommends for your particular dog.
i've always gotten the pain meds. it's whats best for them. i don't want them feeling any more pain then they have too. and how i'd feel if i had my balls cut off (if i had them...)

Dr. Grant is also great - Lake Wheeler Vet
