I got HandR Block's Taxcut Federal program for free. I then bought the state program. Why you ask? Because HandR block wants to find as much money as possible for me. Took me 2 hours to do my return. But I'm getting about $300 on my return.

I have used completetax.com for the last few years. The Fed. and state are free if your income isbelow a certain ammount. The ammount increases a little every year. You MUST go through the IRS website for it to be free. There are some other free ones on the IRS website as well.

Some tax software are better than others. They ask better questions, and dig deeper.[Edited on February 1, 2006 at 10:43 AM. Reason : .]

http://www.dor.state.nc.us/electronic/individual/freefile_companies.htmlThere's a choice of four companies there. Some allow under 28,500 (most students), some allow under 50,000. I went with TurboTax b/c it had an extremely nice interface to it. Was able to file two state returns and my federal return for free. Should be getting notification by email in next week for all three and whether they were "approved" or "rejected".FYI, if you are a dependent, your 1098-T's don't mean crap [Edited on February 26, 2006 at 9:59 PM.
