I believe this is a relatively simple problem. The USB is self powered up to a certain point. Low power devices like mice and keyboards can be powered by the bus itself, but high power ones like ext. hard drives, printers, etc. need their own source of power. Looks like the power source for your cooling pad has died (or somehow been disrupted) and the computer shut the device down because the USB bus was not able to handle the power load. I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure thats what it is.

there is no power supply for the cooling devicei plug the usb end into the computer and at the other end is a jack that looks like an old nokia charger, and i plug that into the targus cooling pad, it is only 2 fans but they do a really good jobi appreciate your help, i also have a wireless card plugged in, is it that i'm just running too many devices? i never run the laptop off the battery, its always plugged in, so i figure it SHOULD have enough power.[Edited on January 29, 2006 at 1:03 AM. Reason : also, i have run the wireless and the pad before at the same time, and had no problems][Edited on January 29, 2006 at 1:04 AM. Reason : and is there a way i could maybe up the power to the usb device?]

Are either of the fans clogged or jammed or anything?Have you changed anything from when the computer was working? Is the connector firmly attached?

It sounds like you're just drawing too much power from the bus. Are all the devices connected directly to the computer, or do you have an external hub? If you do, is the external hub powered? I beleive using a powered USB hub (with it's own ac adapter and such) might help.

How many devices do you have connected to the USB. I ran into a similar issue a few days ago where they were using all 8 USB ports and it exceeded the power limits. I removed a couple and walla it worked.

If you have a printer plugged into the hub, unploug it and use it as needed.
