Occasionally my monitor likes to put out a really really awful high pitch sound. If I turn off the speakers it's still there, it doesn't go away until I cut off the monitor. Any clue what could be causing this?

Your monitor has fleas.

its the flyback transformer causing the noise, just get an LCD monitor, they dont make any noise[Edited on January 25, 2006 at 4:17 PM. Reason : see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flyback_transformer]

Change the refresh rate to something other than 60hz. If a game/application controls this, you'll need to change in there as well.
