i've done a lot of research online but now i want some opinions of people on here and whether or not it was a good experience in unlocking. i'm worried something could go wrong but from those that have successfully done it on other boards say it is worth it. what do u guys think?

I unlocked mine, OC'd just a little. Started getting hot and showing artifacts. I put it back stock. could be my case cooling though.
1/24/2006 3:58:21 PM
I unlocked mine, it was unstable, overclocked it instead and it's been fine
1/24/2006 3:59:44 PM
^^ do u think the OC caused the artifacts or the actual pipe unlocking?[Edited on January 24, 2006 at 4:00 PM. Reason : .]

these programs (ie rivatuner) will have a way to autodetect good overclocking settings for your card. i did that and the unlocking trick, and it made a very noticeable difference in performance.
1/24/2006 4:02:30 PM
o i didnt know about the autodetect in rivatuner. i downloaded it and all set to go but just got a bit nervous cause i dont want to screw up the card.
1/24/2006 4:03:33 PM
so leave it the fuck alone then. There's a reason the cards are what they are. They are binned for what they are sold as.

i didn't have any problems at all.

^^What's that shit for? What part of what I said is incorrect or out of context here? You obviously have no fucking clue what you are doing, so why are you even considering it? You aren't going to get any noticeable improvement from doing so, other than more heat and a bigger power bill. And being able to shake your ewang with pride in having a 293874mhz core overclock.
1/24/2006 9:12:26 PM
no i do know what i'm doin as i have researched this quite a bit. all i wanted was personal reactions and insights from people on here who have done it. wtf is so hard to understand about that?

And I'm giving you my personal insight and opinions.Having been in the enthusiast market as a personal hobby, as a commercial system builder, hardware reviewer, among other things.Reflashing cards to unlock pipelines is going to be a waste of time. You might find 1/100 cards that have fully operational disabled pipelines. nVidia especially bins the fuck out of their gpu's, there isn't going to be another radeon 9x00 type of pipeline gain. On average you will do it, see retarded artifacting, and flash back, having wasted an afternoon. At worst you brick the card. It's not worth the effort.Same thing for GPU overclocking. If you have a 6800, games are already playable. On air, you aren't going to gain but a small improvement in performance, which is only going to matter if you are in a benchmarking war with someone.Just save yourself the time and keep your system happy and run the parts as they were intended.

thank u, i appreciate all that.

neon where do u get this shit?? u come into every computer post talking shit u obviously don't know about. first u say telll me a socket a cpu is faster than a socket 754(both of which i've owned, experienced and benchmarked) now this.i own a geforce 6200 i've unlocked 4 piplines bringing my total to 8 pipes and overclocked it to 500core/ 637mem from 300/550. and i nearly doubled my 3dmark 05 scores (from 18xx to 30xx) and can now play f.e.a.r. at a higher resolution. i agree theres some instances where the gain is marginal compared to the amount of risk but u completly dismiss unlocking pipelines and overclocking. there's a reason peopel do it and it's not to kill their stuff.btw i'm willing to take screens shoots and/or invite you over to prove u wrong.[Edited on January 24, 2006 at 11:59 PM. I said the MEMORY BANDWIDTH is higher. And the OVERALL performance between 754 and socket A is not very large, practically speaking. a 939 system will smoke a 754 system with the same rated cpu and memory. And I thought I was being obvious in referring to 2nd teir cards, not budget cards. He isnt going to double the performance of a 6800 by unlocking it or overclocking or both. Not even close.I've unlocked dozens of different cards over the years. I don't need to see your system to believe you. The 6200 is absolutely worth unlocking, I agree with you 100% on that. But even as a softmodded 6600, it's still not a true gamer's card. Now IF there was a SLI capable soft-moddable 6200, then it would be worth consideration. 100 bucks for ~6800gt performance would be nice. But alas, it doesn't exist that I'm aware of.

all i know is i did the unlocking trick and overclocked this 6800gt and it allowed me to play with pretty much max settings in source, and it was not able to do this beforehand. no problems with overheating, no crashes, etc. my card is also eVGA brand btw.if i were you i'd give it a shot just to SEE if you notice a difference. but do what you want, it's not guaranteed to be 100% safe/stable. might want to just start out OC'ing in small increments.
1/25/2006 12:56:20 AM
uh, if you have a 6800gt, there's nothing to "unlock".I have an eVGA 6800gt as well. and numerically speaking, it doesn't overclock very well.

hahah noen got clowned

its a softmod when unlocking the agp 6800 version, so if you see it artifacting, just change it back, no harm no foul most of the time. Mine is unlockd and OC'ed and runs pretty damn stable.
