depends on your priorities - if you don't need a micro-camera, something like the sony DSC-W7 or canon A620 take very good pictures.

if you absolutely need a small camera, the canon sd 500 or 550 would probably be your best bet

i'm using an sd500 now... retail prices just dropped on it so you should be able to get it online for around $300... good pics for a small camera. sd400 is a bit thinner and cheaper though also

my buddy has one...they are less than $300 at best buy and it is AWESOME...

It really depends on how you are going to use it?

Are you going to carry it around in a pocket to take snapshots, or are you going to need lots of zoom to take pics of far away objects (landscape, etc)?

If you want more zoom, get optical zoom.
