I need merit based scholarships, not financial based. I already know of Phi Kappa PHi. Any help??

what field?

the only thing i've heard of is fraternity related stuff, and that most of the funding will come from the schools funding programs if they actually wanted you. but if anyone knew of anything a student going for a PhD in Philosophy could apply for, let me know.

Dentistry

NSF gives awards, but it's kind of a pain to apply and they're fairly competitive.

They're called research and teaching assistantships. BTW, get all promises of funding in writing.

eh, I've done research for the past 2 years, and I'm ready to get out of it. So many scholarships are reserved only for undergrads...why is that??

Dental school is considered professional school, not graduate school...there are few scholarships to be had since it's essentially your training for a trade rather than them making an investment in your future contributions to a research field. Most scholarships are reserved for undergrads because they call them fellowships at the graduate level. They're fairly available for graduate studies, but professional school is a whole other story. Maybe talk to career services, or check with the dental professional organizations (ADA, etc).

sometimes you can get some deal if you promise to work in an locationwhere there is need of dentists. My neighbor could have gotten somesupport in this way, but he found out about it to late. Ironically he was goingto work in the place that needed dentists anyway because he liked the area.

Talk to these people: David Shafer over in the grad school office. David_Shafer@ncsu.edu David is a great source for the kinds of loans, grants, scholarships that are out there. Of course, each school you are applying to may have its own. Still, he is a good start-especially if you are a senior now. ANDtalk to Jennie Lamonte, Fellowship Advising coordinator (the earlier a student can work with her the better - even if you are not planning to go to grad school for a few years, talk to her). She knows where there are significant scholarships (Rhodes, Mitchell, Jack Kent Cooke, and many more) and can give you advice on how to prepare yourself experience wise, application wise, etc... for some major national sources of money.
