I heard on a TV program on PBS a couple years ago that anything more than 10 days would be fatal. Over Christmas break, I went the first 7 days (plus a few more hours) I was in Wilmington without any sleep (not even napping). It wasn't by choice, though. My asthma goes haywire when I go to my parents house because of the dogs, dust, and whatnot. It's not really a big deal for the muscles because I had plenty of time when I wasn't doing anything physical for them to rest. After a while the mind shows a bit of fatigue. It's a really weird experience mentally... hard to describe. So for me... about 170 hours. How long have you stayed awake (consecutive hours, absolutely no sleep)? How would you describe the experience, mentally and physically?I know this seems like a thread for chitchat, but I doubt I'd get any honest answers there.

1/18/2006 3:22:03 PM

I'm a lightweight.... I've only been able to stay awake for 39 hrs. straight. I stayed awake studying all night long and then when I finally had time to sleep I couldn't....
1/18/2006 3:32:38 PM
80 hours, during the fall 2003 exam time hell that I went through
1/18/2006 3:33:17 PM
Pretty sure you are lying about being awake for 7 days.
1/18/2006 3:34:05 PM
^no I'm not. If it weren't a serious post I would have put it in chitchat. It's pretty much impossible to sleep while having an asthma attack and the medication I use for asthma (albuterol sulfate) raises your heart rate and oxygen flow through your body, essentially waking you up.

75 hours.<3 Parris Island
1/18/2006 3:57:54 PM
You had an asthma attack and were on the inhalers for 170 hrs straight? You aren't impressing anyone.
1/18/2006 4:01:52 PM
^ God I admire you
1/18/2006 4:07:56 PM
^^more than one actually and I wasn't on any inhaler. I was on a freakin nebulizer twice a day.
1/18/2006 4:23:04 PM
46 hoursand during that time, i took 3 final exams (on 2 days) during my senior yearthe world record is 18 days according to the guinness bookbut yeah, for most people, over 10 days would be seriously damaging, if not fatal
1/18/2006 5:24:36 PM
18 days is insane. I was reading a little on sleep deprivation and found a study that says while motor and language skills are seriously impaired after prolonged lack of sleep, math skills actually improve with ~36 hours of sleep deprivation. (That doesn't include critical thinking like figuring out how to solve a problem.. just solving problems you know how to solve.)
1/18/2006 5:52:25 PM
i havent slept for ten daysbecause that would be too long
1/18/2006 5:59:12 PM

1/19/2006 3:46:58 AM
90 hours, which isn't good when you're on the job and your job is blowing shit up, but thats what second checks are for. I had a friend who's rucksack turned into a TV at Ranger school . . . he said Dr. Spock was performing surgery on ER. I think that would qualify as tripping.
1/19/2006 4:02:15 AM

And how can you start hearing things after just 18 hours. I mean, come on...
