what "open source" means. Does it have something to do with free software via the internet?

kinda. basically you can view the "source" code so you know exactly whats going on and can make your own changes. best way i can put it.

Some software is be deemed "freeware", which means it is free, but it doesn't mean you necessarily have access to the code that created it. Open source allows people to modify/improve the source code, resubmit it to the author, and hopefully the author will incorporate the improvements in the next version of the program.

^ and if they don't, with some open source licenses (GPL or BSD licenses) you can just use their code, add improvements and make a seperate branch of the code (if your improvements are meritous enough). In the case of BSD license, you can even sell your improvements as a commercial product w/ relatively no strings attached.

Is this one of those threads where the attractive girl makes a dumb thread before even trying to google an answer, and everyone breaks their neck trying to help?
1/16/2006 6:34:53 PM
^^ more or less

I knew I could have googled it... but I figured I would get a better, more in depth explanation from a real person. Thanks for those that helped me.

yeah, you can find anything on google, but chances are people on here have done a bunch of research on tech topics, and can tell you what you need to know without having to sift through a bunch of crap.

^^ haha horny man.she asked a stupid fucking question.she should have asked for opinions on the subject AFTER she at least googled it.

You can't hold non-technical people to the same RTFM standards as technical people. Get over yourselves. If you can't handle someone asking a simple question, don't click on the thread.

I understand what you are saying bobby, but if you know how to use this message board, that implies that you have at least a minimal techinal ability, and typing 'open source' into google, wikipedia, yahoo, etc. is not something far fetched for her, or anybody here to do.[Edited on January 19, 2006 at 12:33 PM.
