i think you are better off getting something used as opposed to one of the really crappy low end guitar and amp packages. Go to Harry's on Glenwood and Guitar Center on Capital and look at the used Fender guitars around the $200 price range. I got a used Feder telecaster from harry's for ~$250 and its great.

I've always said that you just can't beat an Epiphone SG as a starter guitar. Cheap and lightweight, but still sounds dang good for the pricetag. Eventually you'll want the Gibson version

Check http://www.musiciansfriend.com I think they have several guitar/amp starter packs.

i've got a samick les paul artist series that i'll sell for $225 (no negotiation). I bought it at Harry's about a year and a half ago and haven't really played it enough to justify keeping it. I think there are pix of it in my gallery...if not, pm me and i'll email you some or post em somewhere.

oh and i have a strap and cord, but no amp with it...

Why don't you just get an acoustic? Then you can save the cost of the amp. I think it's better to start learning on the acoustic.

Do you already have an acoustic? If not, acoustic is much better to start on, and I would suggest a Yamaha. Even their lower-end models sound pretty good and are well-built.

If you already own an acoustic, or are dead-set on an electric, then a couple of good suggestions have already been made. Go used--check out small guitar shops and even pawn shops. An Epiphone SG is probably a good choice, as is a Japanese or Mexican Fender Stratocaster or Telecaster. Even among the foreign-made models, the Fender branded guitars are better than the comparable Squiers. You could also consider a used Ibanez RG-series, or something to that effect.

^^yea, definitely go used. Mexican Strat are nice, so are Epiphone Les Paul Series. Squiers are crap.

Strats suck.

Get a Mexi Tele and you'll be a happy rock machine.

teles sound too thin. Strats are more versatile.

If you think a Tele sounds thin, you're using the wrong Tele.

They're pure fucking rock guitars.

Springsteen, Strummer, and Richards can't be wrong.

I'm still pretty damn impressed with the Rogue acoustic I got for like $45 bucks

You can still get em for like $60, and for that price, you can consider yourself a learner and not be out a huge amount of money if it turns out you don't play as much as you thought you would.

That's a good point.

You can buy a ridiculously cheap-yet-serviceable guitar until you're sure you're going to get into it, then drop some cash on a nice midrange model.

You can buy a decent lower end model, then upgrade to a nicer midrange model.

In the former case, you'll be out less money if you decide to quit, and you'll have more money to upgrade if you choose to do so. In the latter, you're out more if you quit and you're still stuck with a guitar with next to no resale value. If you keep going, you've got less cash to buy a nicer guitar with.

I'd go with the former, but that's just me.

plain and simple, any guitar you buy for under 200 will most likely sound like shit...if you are really looking to learn, playing a shitty guitar will probably discourage you from practice/play

in other words, go look for something used or one that you can play and mess around with first before settling for a 'beginner' instrument

if it's a shitty guitar - meaning one that is difficult to play and make sound nice, then yeah, it probably won't be the best thing to learn on.

but you can definitely get a decent learner guitar for cheap, and to the untrained ear of a non-elitist, what's the difference?

money that can be put towards lessons, books, and when the persons skills are up to par, a nicer instrument in the long run.

Once I saw new BC rich warlock about $179. Believe me, the sound was just fine for that price. (it got a crazy look tho) . I think it's good enough for a beginner. Or else, i paid $350 for my ampeg guitar. It's my favorite, cheap&terrific sound. Probably good choice for starter.

^ The low-end BC Rich's suck. The strings will start buzz after a short while.

I suggest an Epiphone SG for a beginning guitarist. You can find them for $130-150 at GC.

i'd go used. i'd look for a fender squire telecaster. it'll be tough finding a good new guitar for 200. baseline for beginner guitars is probably around 250ish.
