I have a '99 Jeep Cherokee and when I step on the gas, the engine seems to bog down or takes a second to respond. This only happens when my fuel is low so I suspect I have water in the tank and I need to drain it. I guess it could be the fuel filter, but I would think it would happen regardless of fuel level. The engine has approx. 105,000 miles on it. Any suggestions?

gas isn't on empty, I have plenty of fuel where it shouldn't loose power.....dickhead.

yet it only happens when you're low on fuel... very possible when its that low it isn't hitting the fuel pickup right after braking or something like that.but if it just started happening randomly then i don't know, i'd just leave it fuller of gas

Thinking about it a bit, when the fuel level is lowest in the tank is really about the only time that the pump has to pull a certain amount of head. Could be that the fuel pump has a bit of wear, and is cavitating a little bit when your level is low. It could also be a proliferation of trash and/or a plugged up pickup strainer contributing to this whole deal.My recommendation is to keep more than a quarter of a tank of fuel in 'er to begin with, and change your filter as a precautionary measure...I'll bet checking fuel pressure when she's full and when she's low might shed a little more light on the situation.Has your fuel pump been louder than normal lately?

Yeah I was thinking about replacing the filter anyway and since the motion has been seconded I will. I haven't noticed anything unusual bout the pump noise, other than the fact I can still here it turn on.

isnt the filter in the tank? why not replace the pump at the same time?
