mellocj dropped his FE off at the house for me to build on Saturday. He happened to be driving an M1008 that he'd borrowed from a buddy.I know they only have a 6.2, but it's a damn reliable engine if treated well, and the TH400 tranny is bulletproof as well. The only thing I don't like is 24v electrics, but I can get batteries at a good price, as well as most electric stuff.Any of you fellas give me a line on one for cheap?

it's not terribley hard to convert them to 12v. keep an eye on nc4x4.com and put a want ad up, i see them there from time to time. also watch the state surplus auctions. there's also some government site you can bid on military surplus stuff, i can't remember the name off hand... i know Tuite probably knows.

I've got a factory 4 bbl intake that will fit that motor if he wants to go that route. I'll let it go right
1/9/2006 8:46:00 PM
wtf is an FE anyhow?
1/9/2006 8:51:02 PM
you would need some bigger tires or regear it, max speed is about 50 or 55.

FE is the original Ford big block...330-332-352-360-390-427-428.It's a Y-block design (oil pan skirt drops below crank centerline), and the intake manifold actually comprises part of the valve cover gasket mounting surface (a la carbed or TBI Chevy 2.8/3.1).Can't go as big as the Ford FF/385 series big blocks (429/460) tho.

somebody figure out the rpms on that motor at 55 with 4.56 gears and that size tire. I'm too tired to look up the formula. that will settle the argument

Thanks, Ben. Where the heck are they located?
1/9/2006 10:11:43 PM
western NC, near murphy
1/9/2006 10:12:12 PM
yeah, they're slower than christmas in acceleration and top speed. i know for a fact they'll go faster than 55 though, closer to 70-75 depending on terrain. even with larger tires or a regear, don't expect much more. while that is basically a gear/rpm limited speed, the motor runs out of steam in that range too. i dunno that i'd consider a th400 bulletproof in such a large/heavy truck, and a 208 case certainly isn't up to the task of much heavy use. just the axles will bring ~1500 easy, so if you find one in that range jump on it.

I ain't into it for the heavy 'wheeling...But for the trailer towing capability...yeah. That's my bag. Don't even care if I can't get over 55, maybe 60 tops.

Max comfortable speed is about 50mph. They all come with 4.56 gears stock, obviously th400 doesn't have OD. Engine speed is about 2400rpm to go 50 mph, with stock tires (approx 32"). 55mph = 2633rpm, 65mph = 3100rpm
