i think they gave him the contract because, unlike ty willingham, charlie weis wouldve gotten job offers from a dozen NFL teams to be their head coach because weis won superbowls in NE...

but convince me ND was great...now granted, they played pretty damn well against USC...but come on, 2 wins against teams with winning records? fucking Chapel Hill doubled that

Good year in terms of football...maybe, maybe not. I think they played pretty well despite the losses. The level of competition point is valid, though.

For the program, though...the hype alone is enough to be a good year. They're back in the spotlight and they made it to a BCS bowl, getting their name to recruits. It's just like after Ty's first year.

i agree with what you said but i'm more disputing how they deserved a BCS bowl in the first place...Michigan was the only quality opponent that they beat who had a record of .500 or better ( I don't consider Navy a quality opponent)

That's not really Weis's fault, though, so much as the schedule.

They lost to USC and OSU, one of whom is playing in the title game and one of whom was expected to compete for that right earlier in the season.

The Michigan State loss was bad, but State has had their number the last few years and was definitely pumped for that game.

They went toe to toe with (and barely lost to) the best team in the nation this year

In 2003 they lost to us in the Gator Bowl

They've come a very long way

^^ So by that logic, would you consider this year and last year great years for NC State since we beat the eventual ACC champion?

we barely lost to Ohio State in triple overtime during their 15 game win streak or whatever...did we play in a BCS bowl that year? any year? we've also beaten the shit out of Navy before

^^ No, there's a big difference between National Champions and Conference Champions.

One has to be the best of every D-1A team.

The other just has to be better than Miami and VT.

Ohio State wasn't the #1 team in the nation at the end of that year. They'd lost to Wisconsin and Michigan. Not to mention we proceeded to lose our last two games of that season.

So it's really not the same thing at all.

Well considering the extent to which they shit on the #2 team last year (and may very well do it again this year), I don't think they have many doubters as to being the top team in the nation.

Or at the very least, they're #2.

I do think ND is overrated and that they had a solid, but not great year. The fact that their schedule turned out to be soft was not their fault. Purdue, Michigan State, Tennessee, Pittsburgh, Washington, and Stanford all had very disappointing seasons. ND always plays a quality schedule and I think they are a better team than Oregon.

There's also a big difference in what NCSU fans consider a great season, and what a top tier team considers a great season. Winning the ACC championship would be a great season for us.

The fact remains that almost beating someone does not make you good.

Notre dame beat no one of any consequence, and therefore deserves no respect for that.

that was last year

they have different players this year

besides Oklahoma's status as the #2 team last year is a big question mark.

and fsu proved they could play with the #3 team in the country

They are the only team to play USC close this year. If that doesn't deserve respect and show that they're a pretty good football team, then I really don't know what to tell you. There are human voters for a reason.

Auburn wasn't going to do any better against them last year.

And ND proved they could play with both the #1 and #4 team in the country, whereas Oregon (who was really the only other team who was going to get the BCS slot) proved they couldn't hang with the #1 team in the country and couldn't beat an unranked team in a bowl game.

alright, this thread is titled "Convince me that ND had a GREAT year" not a good year, a GREAT year. I'll concede that they had a good year, but when your best "win" is a LOSS, you did not have a GREAT year.

Only team??? Fresno State lost 50-42 and was winning in the second half. USC scored the last nine points.

Lots of teams led against them in the second half. They didn't show up until after halftime probably in about 50% of their games.

Here's the thing I'm curious about, because I really don't know on this one, but...

Who deserved the BCS bid more than ND?

Ok, so if I'm the BCS, I'm trying to find the best team between ND and Oregon

Now, granted, ND didn't beat much of anyone, but they hung with the #1 team in the nation. So in theory they're obviously pretty good, right?

Contrast that with Oregon who got blown out, but did beat a bunch of low ranked teams.

You've got to find some team to play the #4 team in the nation -- who would you honestly choose?

As an aside, I just want to mention that I really don't give two shits about ND and whether they had a good year, great year or not. I've just thoroughly enjoyed some of the games they've been a part of.

you cant define a once struggling team's success in a season by wins and losses. Come on TreeTwista, you know that. Thier loss to USC alone put them back in the national spotlight.

They were within one touchdown until there was like a minute left.

The second touchdown came with under 2 minutes left. OSU was trying to run out the clock (since they didn't want ND to get the ball back) and Smith had made two impressive plays on the third and longs of the drive. Then he handed the ball off to Pittman who broke free and scored a 60 yard TD.

Basically, ND defense fucked up at the end. The game was well within reach until that point.

Quote :
"Really?!? I dont think you watched the game either. OSU was in control the whole time."

If NDs defense had been able to stop Smith on those third and longs at the end of the game, they would've had more than enough time to tie it up. They were by no means out of reach.

You put down Navy, but this is a totally different team than the one NC State beat back when Phil was here. New head coach, new offense, and the #1 rushing attack in the country (not to mention the least penalized team in the country yards wise). I really would have loved to see the Navy offense match up against the NC State defense this year - Manny and Mario would have had to learn to stay home much more than they did for the most part this year. And it's not like NC State had powerful offense to make up for missed opportunities like they did with Phil.

I'm not trying to say that Navy is a powerhouse, but I also can be pretty sure that if I bet 100 bucks against all of you that you didn't watch more than 2 Navy games all season, I'd be a very rich man. And unless you watch the games, you really don't know what you're talkng about. Those of you who knock Navy for the losses they had to NC State are simply living in the past.
