Does anyone have good biochem 451 notes either from Sylvia or Knopp that I can buy them from you or you can rent them to me for a day and i'll make copies of them.....PM please if you do have any notes. This is my last semester and I need to graduate and pass this class, I want to get all the study aids I can.....I have heard so many horror stories of biochem!
12/30/2005 9:52:23 AM
They won't help you.
12/30/2005 11:12:46 AM
notes don't help you, old tests do.
12/30/2005 1:42:35 PM
The notes come straight from the book, pretty much word for word.

anyone who fails this class is a total fucking idiot...sorry to anyone who didIts hard to make a good grade, but its also hard as fuck to fail. If you do any work at all you will make at least a C. Yeah, if you're one of those people who makes straight A's from just going to class, you might fail biochem by doing that. All you have to do is stay on top of top of the work and you will at least make a C. I wouldnt even waste my time/money trying to find notes, plus knopp gives a website for his old tests.
1/2/2006 5:30:19 PM
The old bch notes do help. If you rely just on old tests you're guaranteed to fail. Really, to survive the class and do well....memorize just about everything they teach you in class, in the notes, and in the book.
1/2/2006 5:56:28 PM
If you fail this class, you're not a dumbass. I've seen people with 4.0s fail. The way they test, grade, etc can ruin anyone.
1/2/2006 6:00:31 PM
eh...i would believe you...because before I took the class it was just "i know a someone who knows someone who took it and failed the shit out of the class"but then I talked to the TA's who made B's, whose friends passed, who all thought they were going to fail by the end of the semester....and everyone passed. The grading scale is tilted, 15 points instead of 10 per letter. So yo uthink you're doing worse than you really are....plus they give you more extra points than you think on the tests. I literally dont know anyone who took the class last semester that put forth any effort and failed. I know people who had C's going into the final, thought they failed the final, and made a B. There is so much information that the class gets overwhelming at times. If you approach it like any other class, yeah, you will fail. The thing is that the problem sessions, the class its self, and the work that is assigned helps you so much that the only way to fail is to copy from someone else or not do it. All you have to do is approach it from the beginning with a good attitude and do some work, and you'll be fine.

The tests are very simple if you do what they tell you to do, which is memorize everything. Every definition, every structure, every reaction. From there most of it's just drawing purely from memory ("draw this structure" or "define this") and the calculations they ask for are simply based on the definitions. If you put in the work, it's very easy to make an A in it. If you don't put in the work, it's very easy to fail. But it's not like the course itself is responsible for making people fail--it's that people aren't willing to do the work.

Well, the thing I thought was most challenging was when they pulled old organic stuff on you, and it had been a little while since I had seen the stuff. I remember Knopp asking why this one structure (i think 2-nitrophenol or something like that) had a low pKa value, and if you didn't remember electron donating and electron withdrawing groups, you were screwed on that question.[Edited on January 2, 2006 at 9:22 PM. so do any of you who took the class have your notes that i can make copies of themor do you have your old tests. i think they will help me....i usually learn more from other people's notes bcz i read them more carefully than my own notes.pm me if you can lend me your stuff for a day or two to make copiesthanks to all of you for the advices
1/3/2006 1:44:25 AM
Did you read anything that was written in this thread?^^if you're basing your analysis of the class on one question that was probably a "puzzler" question in the first place, you're retarded. He goes over the pKa stuff so much that you shouldnt need organic 2 to remember that material. Knopp purposefully puts questions on his test that you cant answer. Thats why he also grades tests out of 32 points, and there might be 35-40 points on a test...hell...i think one of our tests this semester had 10-12 extra points on it. They're not labled as extra credit, but they're there. [Edited on January 3, 2006 at 11:30 AM. Reason : ]

lord forbid they ask something fairly simple from a prerequisite class

so back to the original topic.....does anyone have notes or old tests???comon people!
1/3/2006 6:22:04 PM
ok you're just being a dumb bitch nowKNOPP GIVES YOU LIKE 8 YEARS WORTH OF OLD TESTS, AND THE TA'S SHARE THEIR OLD TESTS AND ANSWERS WITH YOUYOU DONT NEED THE NOTES, THE TESTS ARENT EVEN BASED OFF THE NOTES ANYWAY...YOU HAVE TO READ THE BOOK, WHICH MIGHT BE DIFFICULT FOR YOU CONSIDERING YOU COULDN'T EVEN COMPREHEND THE ADVICE GIVEN IN THIS THREADnow I know why people fail biochem[Edited on January 4, 2006 at 12:23 PM. lol, biochem majors can be harsh.
1/4/2006 1:16:36 PM
knopp = HUGE curve

^^^You need to keep comments like that OUT of Study Hall. Your most useful comment so far was Knopp provides old tests. Do you know where this person might pick up such said tests? If you don't, you aren't doing anything at all.persian, when do you need these notes by? Seems like you'll need them before the first test, but not in the next 3 days or so. If you post some flyers early in the semester, you'll probably find somebody with them. You can also ask your advisor if she knows a student or two who already had the same biochem instructor.

What's your major? If you've made it this far, you don't have to worry about passing. Just do the work and dust off the old brain cells for memorizing stuff.Understanding the material is going to be a lot easier if you don't rely on crutches and actually sit down with it and make notecards and do the old tests. When I took Knopp's class in the summer, he had notes outlines at the copy place on hillsborough that you could add to as needed, and his material changes a little from semester to semester, I believe. It's not very difficult material, just a lot to keep straight in your head, which is easier to do when you're not trying to interpret other student's work, in my opinion.

I agree with Perlith...While we're trying to help someone out, we have this lamo trying to act all big and bad...If you can't offer useful advice and want to patronize everyone on this thread, why don't you bug someone else.

I don't know you, but I think you would do the best if you took your own notes (sometimes other people's notes can be misleading). Just listen in class and take good notes then, read the book and mark important points, and combine those notes. That's how I did it and you really LEARN and understand the information instead of memorizing (which made the class easy for me and is better in the long run). Also if you have all of these notes written out you won't have to cram for tests. I would have the notes written out and then just study a day before the test and do well.Definately find people with old tests though because even though Knopp posts old tests, there are no answers which was totally not helpful. And I wouldn't worry too much about failing because I don't think too many people do.
1/4/2006 8:34:40 PM
god damn people...I thought I was trying to help in my first few posts by telling her not to worry about it because there are too many other things she needs to focus on. She didnt bother to ask where to get those tests, so i didnt give her the fucking answer. It wont be too hard to find out when she goes to class the first day and he gives you the website. ^basically summarized everything I said, or implied...sorry if you stiffs didnt get it. If its not helpful to tell her not to waste her time and money getting other peoples notes, then fuck me sideways....biochem majors suck too!!!!!!!!!1

thanks for all those who took the time to respond to my question.your advice has been helpful but the girl who keeps calling me a bitch and curses everyone out, needs to take a chill pill......seriously its just a thread on notes and biochem, its not world war III here.....take it easy....Also if knopp posts the tests without an answer key that is not really worth anything.....bcz there is no time to go through 3yrs worth of tests if there are not answer keys......you might just have time to do one or two tests, especially with all the heavy load there is to read, learn and memorize.thanks again to all those who were friendly enough to help and write something for me

Direct Answer: Old tests are key to surviving Sylvia's class, its really ALL you need. Notes are indeed garbage.
