When is it ok to not upload on bittorrent? I always thought there was some sort of norm that to get the benefits, one must risk a little bit... but bitcomet doesn't seem to support this idea.[Edited on December 20, 2005 at 1:45 AM. Reason : I changed my comma to an elipses]

12/20/2005 1:43:57 AM
Why is it incoherent? Not uploading is essentially cheating the system, isn't it?
12/20/2005 1:44:29 AM
12/20/2005 1:44:38 AM
i don't knowis that what you were sayingi can't read your fucking monkey english

I no longer wonder how Ultra has managed to post approximately once every 5 minutes.
12/20/2005 1:46:30 AM
Ernie, congrats, you've contributed nothing. Thanks for your time and effort though. I can only hope you could have done something better with it but didn't.
12/20/2005 1:47:11 AM
12/20/2005 1:47:55 AM
So basically you wanna know how ethical it is to download a whole bunch of illegal movies using BitTorrent while not uploading anything?
12/20/2005 1:48:31 AM
Make sure you edit your post after you fuck up trying to tell me I don't know English.
12/20/2005 1:48:44 AM
yeahi typed 'sa' instead of 'say'that's a typoyou can't fucking compose a coherent sentencenot really the same thing, buddy
12/20/2005 1:49:49 AM
I don't think ethics apply when you're stealing something. Some trackers blacklist clients that don't upload though, and people who don't upload suck. Just limit your upload rate.
12/20/2005 1:50:38 AM
bitcomet is becoming widely banned. Therefore, this won't me much of an issue before long. As for ethics, if you arn't uploading, you're just a leech and you should be burned off like one. That being said, if you're really worried about getting caught downloading something that you shouldn't, just learn how to use IRC and steal software the way the rest of the pros do. I got my software from IRC in the early days before napster, the resnet local network, and the plethora of filesharing software that followed. Guess what, IRC was there first and is still there now.
12/20/2005 1:50:56 AM
I did use IRC when I first learned about the internet... around 1996 or so. I have since viewed it as a kind of lame way of getting stuff though, due to the whole queue system that seems prevalent. I don't like the fact that BitComet lets you cheat on the upload side of things, but it's hard to avoid doing so especially with limited bandwith devoted to that stream.
12/20/2005 1:53:00 AM
You guys ever heard of Usenet?
12/20/2005 1:53:27 AM
Newsgroups don't work well with roadrunner and shit dissapears too fast.
12/20/2005 1:54:15 AM
IRC is no better or worse than any other filesharing service as far as "safety".
12/20/2005 2:05:47 AM
ahahahahahYou think the "pros" use fucking fservs and xdcc bots on IRC. AHAHaHAhAAnd you think BitTorrent is better HAhaHAhAHAAnd you don't even understand usenet HAHAAHAhAhaDude, just stop trying to download illegal shit. Obviously you are too stupid to avoid getting caught for long, so just stop before you do.
12/20/2005 4:40:17 AM
I thought most BitTorrent clients didn't even have an option to turn off uploads? I know that you have to upload while on Azureus or BitTornado.btw doesn't PeerGuardian help?[Edited on December 20, 2005 at 7:10 AM. Reason : ]

Does PeerGuardian help?
12/20/2005 1:56:30 PM
nope.
12/20/2005 4:38:14 PM
i can only assume anyone whose name is on the ISP account associated with the IP that gets "caught" would receive a kind letter from their ISP telling them to stop. Last I heard the ISPs (TWC etc) aren't releasing their customers info...has this changed?also just out of curiousity, why doesn't peer guardian work...I mean I always assumed it didn't and never installed it because of that, but why doesn't it work?
12/20/2005 5:42:33 PM
They have to release information if they are subpeneaed.
12/20/2005 6:28:09 PM
i wonder if this thread will be locked...i'm finding it mildly intringuing
12/20/2005 6:33:50 PM
it should be locked for sheer stupidity, not for banned topics.

12/21/2005 1:55:47 AM
Speaking of PeerGuardian or whatever it is. Do you guys really think it is possible to mask your true IP address on the Internet without a trustworthy proxy?
12/21/2005 2:26:57 AM
I think PeerGaurdian just blocks known gov./shady IPs from connecting to your computer. They would technically have to actually connect to your computer and download something illegally for them to incriminate you, or something like that.[Edited on December 21, 2005 at 2:42 AM. Reason : otherwise it's just circumstantial which is not enough to be charged]
12/21/2005 2:41:10 AM
What if they just find your IP address on a tracker for a certain illegal file? Is that not proof enough?
12/21/2005 2:43:46 AM
No, I don't think so. It's like on COPS when they are busting drug dealers or prostitutes, they can only bust them after a transaction is completed. Just merely being in their presence isn't enough.[Edited on December 21, 2005 at 2:47 AM. Reason : i really don't know though]
12/21/2005 2:46:58 AM
Making a post about ethics using a program you most probably aren't using for legal purposes... that's just funny. But for me, I just share a shitton of legal things ranging from fansubbed anime, hosting torrents like the Azureus download for others to use etc. I don't download many illegal things right now as most of the music out sucks, and the stuff i do like I can afford to buy online of course. I'm not paying $20 for a fucking music CD. $10 yes... 20 no.
12/21/2005 8:48:11 AM
If peerguardian lets you connect to other people, then it will let the cops connect to you.Banning "TEH GOV IPS" isn't going to do anything
