Anyone out there ever had a weenie dog and have some good advice for me on housetraining it and anything else I need to know about them??

I was wondering what the first year of shots and the spaiding(spelling?) was going to cost and any other vet visit costs.

I am getting one around Christmas

There's a program in Wake county that you gan get her done for $65 as well as deworming, check up, feas, and nail trim for $10 extra.

Daschund's typically have a lot of back problems as they age. And puppy pads are such great things to invest in for house training. And ALWAYS, reward her when she does something the is supposed to and punish her for stuff she in't supposed to do-that really makes them remember.

I got a mini back in Oct. I've have a standard size for over 13 years.

Housetraining well it's going to be a slow process. You need to be consistant and watch them carefully. Reward everytime they use the bathroom in the correct place.

He just got neutered thursday and it was a little under $100. The last puppy visit he had was $67.

Neither of mine have had any back problems but you need to watch the weight (they love to eat!) and don't allow them to jump of things or go up steps. In fact the breeder I got my mini from hasn't any back problems in 28 years.

^^ SO TRUE! If you're gone for a week or so and you come home and greet it excitedly, it'll get so excited that it pees on you! So don't come in and be like "HEYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" and start petting it a lot or anything.

My fiancee's family has one (a mini, short-haired weenie) and it's AWESOME. The only two *bewares* I'd say are that it pees when REAL excited and it has a nearly unquenchable appetite. It will eat anything and everything it finds, and her's will even try to open the cabinet to get into the garbage can! He's not fat, but boy it'll eat whenever it gets the chance.

He's really cool though, very nice lap dog and really fun to play with. He's pretty funny too, you can have lots of fun with 'em. I would highly recommend one...they have 2 younger boys and it's been a great family pet, and they keep it in an indoor cage. It doesn't stink at all and doesn't mind baths *that* bad.

The only tough thing was potty-training it...it would find corners in the house and take dumps and it was TOUGH getting it to learn to pick up the leash when it hadta pee/poop so they could take it outside. It just takes repetition and more repetition...be expect to clean up after it inside a few times.

I don't own it personally so I have no idea the upkeep costs, but it's an awesome pet

I have a part daschund lil girl. She is wonderful...

I echo the bathroom/eating habits. Tessie LOVES boys, and she goes crazy around my guy friends. They know not to talk to her until I take her out. She also got into some chocolate (SCARY moment for this owner here!) last week, and she is always looking for food (leaves, worms, etc.).

And be aware, when I say they'll eat anything, I mean it.

Their's has eaten everything from chocolate to tinfoil to paper to fur from a jacket to actual money (dollars and coins). I'm amazed it's still living after all that really...

there has to be some degree of myth about that cuz my old beagle ate everything in site. she had an entire bag of hershey kisses, tin foil and all, and had 0 problems.

I have a solid black mini dachsund and she is perfectly behaved. She hasn't had any back problems and is about 6 years old. She loves to sleep under the covers and when she was younger she would crawl inside the shirt you were wearing to take a nap. We used puupy pads to train her. When she woke up at night my bro would just have one next to his bed and put her on it until she went. So during the day we would have one by the back door and she would go there...then if we saw her heading that way we would just take her outside and reward her for going. They are soooo small as puppies.. If they do have an accident, it's not much too clean up.

My weenie dog ate an entire pound of baking chocolate with no problems, and my previous weenie dog ate a bottle of ibuprofen with no problems as well. I think they're made of steel.

ok i'll tell you a bad tale... not to scare you but just to make you be aware of the issues of having a TINY dog...


friend of mine had a mini weenie dog.... it was TINY... ok and it liked to run under people's feet. um well, he and some guys were playing football in the yard. they had the dog put up but it got out. it ran after them... got under their feet... got stepped on... and died. so, keep it put up!

Dachshund rescue groups are wierd about who they will let adopt. They really do not like students.

I love Mini's! Isabelle is 3 and house breaking is a bitch. Buy a crate and a comfy pad and just make her stay in it when she will not go. dachshunds love to be around other dogs.

Honestly, if you feed them good food, they will go like clock work. Isabelle is eating Purina allergy food. Her coat is gorgeous and feels like silk. Clip the nails early and get her used to being touched on her feet. Brush her teeth and give her good treats like dingos.

Keep her from jumping on stuff and pick her up with two hands at all times.

You are going to love having this dog. They are the absolute best.

the major health concern with dachshunds are back problems (and therefore hip problems too). working at the emergency vet, i can't count the number of IVDD dachshunds we saw (slipped spinal disk). it's extremely expensive to treat, and once it happens it will happen again more easily.

good news is that if you keep it from jumping up onto and down from "high places" (aka, even the couch for these midgets), or give it some sort of step stools for any high places it needs to reach, everything should be just fine.

Here is our new puppy!!! We named her Harley and she is 4 weeks old

We wont be able to pick her up until she is 6-8 weeks

^^Yes, it is. They need to be with their mothers for that long. My parents recently got a puppy from a reputable breeder...the breeder wouldn't part with the dog before then.

you can also ask your vet a lot of questions about training and such, they should know alot about the specific breeds and can tell you what works best from their experiences.

oh and for a vet, I love Boulevard Animal Hospital on Western, I go there almost every week and know a few of the vets really well. Dr. Fenton is my favorite but Dr. Evans is just as incredible, theyre fun and answer any questions you have thouroughly!!!

They tend to have back problems. Don't let your dog try to jump down from the couch on it's own. Stairs can also be difficult. Just don't let it jump up onto things or down from high places (eg couches and beds).

mine wouldn't let hers into their new homes until 12 weeks, they need to be a minimum of 8 weeks esp. since they are so small. http://www.dachshund-nmdc.org/pages/codeof.htm
Personally I am glad I waited until 12 weeks, I had very few problems to him adjusting compared to many people who take home their puppies so young.

Everyone I know that has gotten a dog before 6 weeks has noticed wierd social things about the pup.

I got isabelle at 8 weeks. Take lots of pictures and enjoy your puppy! She will grow up so fast.
