i'm determined though. running is sort of helpful it takes my mind off the stress.when do you think I can start seeing some results from a good 5 day week alternate regimen of running and lifting and I pretty okay diet - few carbs, good protein, etc . . . 200lbs 5'11" about 14-15% body fat - GOAL: 185lbs 9-10% body fat - (actually 6%, but I don't think that'll ever happen).

ask thedukehe knows this kinda stuff
12/7/2005 11:49:48 AM
the only way you'll get to 6% is to watch what you eat and do a shitload of cardio.so many threads on this. it's no surprise really.
12/7/2005 1:05:21 PM
Is this a thread or a thought?
12/7/2005 1:20:18 PM
i love working out. its one of my favorite parts of the day.
12/7/2005 1:21:21 PM
i don't understand why people skimp on carbs. if you're an active individual, i would think you would want plenty of carbs.
12/7/2005 1:42:52 PM
^Bingo
12/7/2005 1:43:52 PM
Yes, carbs are very important (the right kind though). I <3 working out, after sitting on a chair all day I cannot wait to get to the gym and rock out on the treadmill or the cardio kickbox class.I'm no fitness expert, but on that regimen you should start seeing small changes in a week or two...you'll notice how clothes fit a little differently, energy levels soar, change in appetite and mood, etc. Small but significant changes. Make sure you behave yourself on your 2 rest days though

working out/dieting is fun and rewardingwhat sucks however, is losing inches off your waist and all of a sudden all your clothes fit baggy, making you look like a fake thug
12/7/2005 1:56:03 PM
Aha. I love all of the armchair fitness experts in here. LiusClues is probably the only one that knows what he's talking about. Going to the gym and doing step aerobics and / or jogging a mile on the indoor track or treadmill with your headphones on does not qualify you to advise others.

Here we go again!!!!!!!!!
12/7/2005 2:02:06 PM
Indeed, but it's true.
12/7/2005 2:08:49 PM
if i haven't been working out for a long time (say 3 months) then start back up, it usally takes me around 6-8 weeks to start noticing real change. After 10-12 weeks it's very evident just looking in the mirror. I feel like i have more energy and may feel denser before then, but as far as looking in the mirror it takes a little longer. Keep in mind that you see yourself everyday, making it more difficult to notice change, other people will notice before you do. And yes, up the carbs, best source of fuel for anyone active. Low glycemic carbs all throughout the day until you work out. High glycemic carbs no other time than just after working out to get your blood sugar back up to where it should be. Blood sugar control is important because sporadic levels trigger the release of insulin which in turn triggers fat storage. Look at any serious bodybuilders diet and you'll see they have high carb intake, usually around 40% of their diet.

I ran about 5 miles after dark last night and forgot to check the temperature before I left. I just wore the shorts and T-shirt I already had on, and it was one of the most miserable runs ever. I got a headache and sore throat from the cold air combined with exhaust fumes and fire smoke, and something weird happened to my eyes. It was 30°.

^^ See, maybe if you'd gone to a college message-board looking for advice on running in the cold from non-experts, you wouldn't have got into that situation But seriously, outdoors in this weather sucks, my training efforts have gone down le toilette [Edited on December 7, 2005 at 2:34 PM. 12/7/2005 2:30:55 PM
I would have run outside regardless of the conditions. With some prior planning, though, I may have altered my dress.^^Yes.
12/7/2005 2:33:20 PM
why were you running in a dress?
12/7/2005 2:34:11 PM
haha

thats why i used past tense.

That's why I'm illiterate.

I ran 6-7 miles in mass a few weeks ago (ambient was around 28 degrees), during the run it wasn't so bad (just shorts/tshirt) but towards the end my fingers started to hurt really bad. After the run, I extended my arms for the first time, and that really hurt (as if my skin was solid, and had to be drawn across my bones, pretty nasty feeling). The thing is, other than my fingers, I did not feel cold at all, it actually felt pretty good. I don't think gloves alone would fix the problem? Is there a problem? Ahmet
12/7/2005 2:41:18 PM
^might want to try running pants and shirt. lycra/spandex. you are getting too cold.
12/7/2005 2:43:30 PM
Gloves suck. They make your hands sweat, and then you take want to take them off, but if you do, you have to either carry them or leave them somewhere you hope they won't get stolen and pick them up later.
12/7/2005 2:46:07 PM
yeah. in the Army we ran in the cold alot. t-shirt/shorts underneath with sweatpants on and a hoodie. skull cap and a set of leather gloves. FYI: people that smoked menthol cigs had a easier time running in the cold.

i suggest trying to be a pro cyclist........that has a habit of slimmin you down...plus it doesnt suck as much as running. i know. i used to run

a 2 phase plan? what's that.
12/9/2005 9:08:33 AM
actually most anyone who posts on this website doesnt know a god damn thing about fitness, so take advice cautiously
12/9/2005 9:47:26 AM
working out sucks when you are trying to overcome atrophy due to 2 bad injuries
12/9/2005 9:51:40 AM
workout what's not broken.

12/10/2005 3:36:20 AM
seriously it's 14-15% . . . no flabbyness. just able to pull some skin, which I hate.so do you think 10% is going to be hard. i'm trying everyday now. i did 5 days in a week running and lifting.
12/10/2005 10:29:05 AM
A lot of people who workout and get big still know dick about diet and nutrition. So take that advise cautiously.
12/10/2005 10:45:15 AM
Your goals are unrealistic, and you'll never stick to a 5 day routine. Get something more manageable, or you'll get burnout and lose all your motivation.
12/10/2005 11:56:20 AM
don't skip out on carbs. that whole low carb thing is a bunch of bstry swimming laps too. do 1000 yards a day. the pounds will melt off and youll tone up quick[Edited on December 10, 2005 at 7:23 PM. Reason : mi]
12/10/2005 7:18:23 PM
i can't swim. and it's sort of embarrasing to look into adult swim lessons.looks like i'll continue running . . . .

I'm not going to pretend to be an expert, but I would add rowing to your routine. The rowing machine is great, it can get me more worked up in 6 minutes of fast rowing than running 3 miles. Also less joint impact and you tone more muscle. Don't stop running though.

another successful day in the gym. it sucks, but the only thing that motivates me to go is the drive there and listening to music on the way. that and the membership is $36/month. i fucked my shoulder up doing incline dumbell presses yesterday - so I took it easy today. leg presses, triceps, abs and ran for 25 min on the treadmill.later gators.
