^ I'm guessing you're driving a Golf (from gallery), so in that case you wouldn't be very safe either, if you were hit by a Tahoe. Bikes are safe; people are not.

^gj on apples and oranges, but to cut it short, golfs get 5 stars for both driver and passenger side.

Those safety tests are against flat concrete walls, so the force is absorbed by the bumper of the golf. A tahoe has a higher bumper, so that absorbtion wont happen and the golf will be crushed.

That said, even a vw is way safer than a bike.

The fucktard-in-a-car quotient has gone up sharply in the last ten years here. It used to be halfway tolerable...I even rode a bike in rush-hour traffic for a couple of weeks.

Now...forget it. I love to ride and miss having a bike, but not that much. Maybe later, when I move a little further out...

I've got several friends who've got pins in their legs...from getting hit by a car...by a driver who had their thumb planted firmly in their ass.

i almost got cut off by a bimmer today. lady felt all bad about it. if the dumb bitch was paying attention to my huge ass headlight and loud ass bike in the first place the problem wouldnt have occurred.

i've been cut off a lot but usually just swerve out of the way or kick their door.

i remember when i first got my GSX-R back on the road after the last time I wrecked it...it had been under repair for probably 6 months while I sourced all the parts, got it fixed, and waited for a paint job. I finally got it roadworthy and took it out for a spin.

at the time, i lived behind Wachovia on Hillsborough St. I didn't even make it to Meredith College before some no-driving lady who was sitting still in traffic in the left lane decided to change lanes in front of me as I passed in the unobstructed right lane. There's NO WAY i could've stopped. I barely would've been able to slow down. I swerved HARD and went around her down the shoulder...must've missed a collision by about a foot.

I thought..."Oh yeah, almost forgot what I'd been missing..."

another time, I was going down Pullen Road (towards Western Blvd). I'm going 10-15 mph over the speed limit, of course...then this car passes me IN MY LANE (there's only one lane in that direction there), missing me by about a couple of feet.

well, i was pretty irate about that, and when he turned right onto Western Blvd, I went by him with the hammer down and giving him a "WHAT THE FUCK, DUDE?" glare as I passed.

I slowed back down to my normal ~10 over, and a little ways down the road, he eases past me really slowly. He came up on a car ahead of him in his way, and changed lanes...IN MY DIRECTION.

I got on the brakes so hard that I did a 55 mph rolling stoppie down Western Blvd. He stopped at the light in the left turning lane for Avent Ferry Rd, and I stopped behind him, put the kickstand down, and walked up to the car fully intending to drag him out of the car and beat the hell out of him right there on the side of the road...

but when I got to the window, he still had the window down, and it was a little asian dude...still on temporary tags, spoke VERY minimal english, and I'm fairly convinced he didn't even realize he was driving like an asshole. I got down at his window and yelled at him until the light turned green. I don't lose my temper and yell at people very easily, but man, I was on autopilot at that point. I went completely fucking ballistic...but I gave that fucker the benefit of the doubt and didn't kick his ass.

i pretty much t-boned a chevy truck a little while ago on the Jones Franklin rd when he pulled out of the driveway right in front of me, the driver of the truck speeded off and the drivers of the three cars coming from the opposite direction who saw the collision didnt even stop to check if i was allright. luckily i was wearing my gear and the bike had a cage. the tailsection was bent sideways and the handlebar was bent, but the bike still ran. i chased the fucker a couple miles down the road till he pulled over, turned out to be a sinior citizen. didnt wanna end up fighting some 70 year old fuck and give him a heard attack, so i had to let him off with a lecture. i still can't beleive none of those fuckers pulled over

^^^^yeah first-gen asians and eastern european women most of the time cannot drive worth of shit. allthough that scooter video of the singapore downtown traffic was amazing.

by the way the guy was arguing later that it was not a hit and run since technically I hit him.

as far as old people, at least in NC you are required to renew your licence every few years. this guy at work just moved from arizona, he is about 35-40 and his licence expires in 2036!

I have no respect for other drivers on the road what so ever when I'm on the bike. Not that I drive like a while manic everyday, just the fact that they never respect me. Expecially the normal drivers who drive to RTP. They all drive like zombies. Night time is even hazardous. Its just ugly even at 6pm over at RTP. I can't believe traffic. Before day light savings time, 6pm was always clear. Now its jam packed and I hate driving at night in traffic.

I saw a guy riding wheelies, had the metal plates on his boots so he could drag them and spark, riding between stopped cars, etc on Capital Blvd in heavy traffic on Sunday afternoon. I think the police got a friendly call about where he stopped to eat lunch...

I rode past a scene in DC last year where one of those crotch rockets was WASTED and there was a whole group of people standing around some guy .... I laughed my ass off.

those of you here who rode with me know i always ride with extra caution and respect for other motorists on busy public roads. you will not see me splitting lanes doing 75 down western. but passing trhough a stopped up traffic jam when i need to get somewhere quick is one of the few advantages i have as a motorcycle rider and im sure as hell gonna take advantage of it when i need to. that said, i always do it in a nicest possible way until an asshole like^ comes along and starts talking shit out the window of his car or swingin doors

You know in california, its legal to go between cars when they are going 25mph or less. I do that on the highway now when its jam packed, bumper to bumper instead of being stupid and actually waiting in line like a caged driver. Fuck that shit. I'm not waiting 90 mins to drive 10 miles.

I have never in my life had a motorcyclist split lanes between me and another car. Maybe it's because I am not a left lane bandit.

If bikers in California are able to do it why can't I? Its not like I'm going 75 mph and weaving between parked cars in dead stop traffic. its an advantage of being small.

Normally, I would agree in bumper to bumper traffic this would be ok. Have to be careful around here though. Most people who spot the smallest gap will lane hop 20 times in a mile because they feel like they are making progress. One of these people might get you. Assuming the law is on your side that is. What I hate more than anyhting though are the people who start driving the shoulder.

Again cali law != nc law. Thats like saying some drugs are legal in other countries so you should have the right to do them here.

god i hope they do.

they have laws for a reason. look, i can barely tolerate someone rationalizing excessive speeding - but splitting lanes? on a bike? and then getting pissed off when people laugh at biker casualties? stick a tampon in it.

so your saying california is another country? I know they are floating away, but they aren't another world. I do agree that lane splitting is a bit risky, specially since americans don't know how to drive.

^we aren't getting pissed off about biker casulaties, its just sad when it happens. Its tragic when its the other person's fault when the bike is obeying the laws. Its not tragic when they don't, just sad. I obey the traffic laws 90% of the time, but in that 10%, I'm doing something stupid because of some other asshat pissed me off. I'll take full blame when and if something happens. I'm not gonna be a pussy and try to point fingers like most idiots. When shit happens, it happens.

dude, CA is the only state in the U.S. where lane splitting is legal.

I think it should be legal everywhere else (with limits, of course...maybe only with stopped traffic or something), but that's not reality.

i'm not saying i've never done it (although only very rarely, and never recklessly like the jackasses you see on the highway every now and then), but it is most definitely illegal.

well I go about 15-20mph whenever I actually lane split. I don't lane split on highways like 440 or 40, but like 54 (chapel hill road) when I need to take get into left or right lane that maybe like 100 cars up. But from RTP, I end up just zig zaging through back roads after back roads just so I don't have to wait in traffic. I actually drive about 25 miles when going in back roads then just taking the direct path (which is 10-11miles). I try to stay off highways as much as possible.

I never said it was, but if that is how you want to see the comparison then so be it. The simple logic is law here does not equal law there. So just because someone else can do it legally in another city, county, state, country, world, universe.... doesn't mean its legal here. Damn, for this argument it doesn't matter.

Actually, he was doing atleast 75 lane splitting while traffic was going 30-35 at the merger of 401 and US-1 and he almost caused a pile up. He was stunting in the middle of Capital Blvd during high density traffic, so yes, I called the cops. As a rider, I hate asshats like that who give other riders such as myself a bad name. Don't like it, get over it and go some where else and kill yourself without messing anyone else's day up. And for those of you who seem to think that if you hit someones car while you are doing stupid shit that you can say it was your fault and everything is ok, you need to sit down for a few minutes and really think it out. Once their car has been hit, it will never have the same value when they try to sell it, even if the repair job is perfect. There is also a mental impact for some people if they were to kill your ass when you run into them. Even if it was your fault, there's a certain mental toll that comes with knowing that someone was killed on the hood of your car. Again, you don't like it, I could give two shits. Go find an empty parking lot to do your stunting, the law isn't on your side no matter how you try to twist it.

Edit: It wasn't a green kawasaki.
