The United States' one-thousandth execution (since the reinstatement of the death penalty in 1976) is going to happen tonight in Raleigh at 2:00 am Friday morning. If you want to protest the execution and pray for the inmate and his victims (or heckle liberals and take pictures for later photoshopping), now is your chance.

(I submitted this for a front page article, but time is short so I'm giving it more exposure right here. Why not use this thread to talk about it and arrange rides and stuff?)

he's a vietnam vet, and was under the influence when he murdered the two.

sounds like a life sentence case, to me. i doubt he'll live to see tomorrow's sun.

Sarcasm noted, but it doesn't really apply.

The underlining logic is really more of "let's see... these dumbasses will never understand that you just can't allow government to kill defenseless people. the concept of sanctity of life is absolutely foreign to these sheep. but maybe we can scare them by reciting the total number of killed. there's a chance they will be impressed with it"

MathFreak, honestly, if you're going to characterize us all as being barnyard animals, at least pick one and stick with it. Pigs, sheep, dogs...we've heard them all. Or you could combine two and go with "pigdogs." That one hasn't been bandied about enough lately.

I like how this criminal says in one breath that he thought his wife was having an affair, and then in the next that he didn't know he'd shot her or why he would do such a thing.

Uh-huh.

I'm going to see if I can get anyone to drive me out there.

Clemency just got denied.

He's got about four hours. I hope he's made his peace with God, I really do, and if you think that's insincere or just stupid, well, bully for you. I'm not pleased that a guy is going to die tonight.

Quote :
"Boyd doesn't deny that he shot and killed Julie Curry Boyd, 36, and her father, 57-year-old Thomas Dillard Curry in rural Rockingham County near the Virginia line. Family members have said Boyd stalked his estranged wife after they separated following 13 stormy years of marriage and once sent a son to her house with a bullet and a note saying the ammunition was intended for her.

Boyd's son Christopher was pinned under his mother's body as he fired a .357-Magnum pistol into her. The boy pushed his way under a nearby bed to escape the barrage. Another son grabbed the pistol while Boyd tried to reload.

The evidence, said prosecutors Belinda Foster, clearly supported a death sentence.

"He rode around with the boys in the car, saying I'm going to go and kill everybody up there," Foster said. "He went out and reloaded and came back and called 911 and said 'I've shot my wife and her father, come on and get me.' And then we heard more gunshots. It was on the 911 tape.""

Sounds like the right decision. Being under the influence isn't a good enough excuse for me. Just because you choose to drink/whatever, doesn't mean that the law all of a sudden doesn't apply to you.

They interviewed one of the protestors on the news.

"Do you know the details of the case?"
"Uh...not really."
"Did you know that he's admitted that he's guilty?"
"Uh...I'm not really...uh..."

While I don't think you should be out there protesting without knowing what the deal is, the fact is that some people oppose the death penalty no matter what a person has done.

I'm one of those that opposes the death penalty universally. I don't think killing is justice. It's only retribution in my book. By now he's dead...and the government killed him. That just doesn't sit well with me.

^^^^Well, yeah, and they eventually got around to saying that. But if you have a cause and your communication skills are on par with a capuchin monkey's, you should steer clear of TV cameras. That's just common fucking sense.

I mean, the single biggest impact that girl had was when she was on local television, and it was not a positive one. Entertained the hell out of me, though.

I respect everyone's right to an opinion but I see no reason why my tax dollars must pay for someone to sit in jail for murder for the rest of his/her life. There are very few cases that I see a reason to spare a murderers life.

I will even admit that I think its almost shameful it took us this long to get to 1000. I agree that we need to make sure that each person put to death is guilty but once they are, end the apeals and put them to death. I even think we should use capital punishment for more crimes but that is for another topic.

If we will euthanize a dog for agression and biting a person, why will we let a person sit in a jail cell with three meals a day and recreation time?

And I am sick to death of people/lawyers trying to find anything and everything in someones past that might be "contributing factors". This filth and people like him killed people - in cold blood. Quit trying to make excuses for this vermin and let them rot.

Used to be a big death penalty backer. Now, not so much. It's not a deterant by any stretch of the imagination. More $ than just letting them rot in jail....... I'm not crazy about the state ending a person's life in the end.

YMMV.

Last I checked, it's actually cheaper to give someone a life sentence than to stick a needle in him. Sounds like BS, I know, but it's mostly the court costs. It takes a lot of time and cash to go through the judicial process for capital punishment.

I know somebody already pointed this out, but it is far more expensive to execute a person than to let them serve a life sentence.

I think the best reason we've got for killing people is basically to make some other people feel better. That's a pretty shitty excuse for a reason.

when you give americans the choice between keeping the death penalty or replacing it with life-imprisonment without possibility of parole, support for the death penalty plummets to the 20s.

So said BBC News this morning

I don't trust the state to not fuck up my water bill. I'm not crazy about them not fucking something like this up as well. To paraphrase Blackstone - Better to let 10 walk then imprison the 1 innocent.

I have actually read all of this info.
Personally I think that we as a legal system from the cops up need to work harder in the first place and then cut the number of appeals because overall I think its a waste of money there too.
As I said in my original reply, no I do not want an innocent person put to death but in reality I would be more than willing to go back to the old days where hangings took place the afternoon of the verdicts. I think people would think alot more about their actions.

Quote :
"He made one mistake, and now it's costing him his life," said Kenneth Smith, 35, who visited with his own wife and two children. "A lot of people get a second chance. I think he deserves a second chance.""

He did not make a 'mistake', he took 2 lives. Those 2 people never got to see their kids again, never got to enjoy another holiday, sunset, or anything else because of this man's selfishness.

A mistake is perhaps a typo in a reply, a bill mailed late, or even a speeding ticket. But murder is NEVER a mistake.
