I was called a bad fan and told to not goto the game because I said VT would beat us. I think this speaks more to the constant (false) mindset that we are a great football program and not so in bball.

P.S.- I feel MUCH more confident about the BBall season then I did about the Football season going into the year.

That said, I haven't had a chance to see much of the bball team this year because of work, so I can't really make a prediction. But I will say I hope we win just to spite my editor, who is a Big 10 fan.

^^ Based on things I've read about the team before the season, the fact that I covered them for two years -- interviews with Sendek and players -- and what I have seen of them this year.

Much doesn't mean none at all.

And for that matter, you don't need to see every minute of every game to get a general feeling. That's all I said. I have a general feeling of confidence based on everything I've already mentioned.

Yes, you do need to see every minute of a game this early in the season when we havent played anyone worth a shit yet. ND is ok, but not great.


If you had seen us play to this point, you would be fairly confident, but skeptical because of some boneheaded mistakes we make over and over. We still have to overcome that scoring drought that hits us once or twice a game. Our offense is definately not clicking yet. One good thing is that our D is pretty good, and I would like to think it was our D that forced ND to miss so many shots the other night, not them sucking balls.

I am not sure how i feel so far.

Ive only been to two of the games, Geulph and VMI, and I saw the second half of the ND game on tv.

I like our rebounding ability when we go big with little head and b-rack but im not sure how effective they are going to be on the offensive end when we face someone with good post defense.

Our defense did look good from what I saw.

If we are to win this game, then two things will have to happen...

Given we'll probably take about 15 3-pointers(barring getting down by a lot early and taking more) so we need to make 10 of those 3's, maybe 11. Our inside game just isn't where it needs to be so our outside game is going to have to take over like it did in the first half against ND.

The second thing, is when we get to the line, we have to convert. We shot pretty good against ND, but we really need to be shooting as a team about 80% to make sure we don't squander big leads at the end.

If we make >=60% of our 3's, play our usual defense, and perform at the line late in the game, we should walk away with a victory.

NC State has posted a 5-5 record against ranked teams before the New Year under Herb Sendek, but has won five of its last seven. SENSATIONAL SOPHOMORES LEAD PACK They may be young, but they're experienced - the Wolfpack's trio of talented sophomores are currently ranked as the first, fourth and fifth-leading scorers on the squad. Sophomores Cedric Simmons, Gavin Grant and Andrew Brackman combined to play 1,396 minutes last season, but are almost a third of the way to that total in just five games this season (385 total minutes) as all three have started all five games this season. Gavin Grant Simmons, who averaged just 3.5 points as a rookie, is leading the team in scoring with 13.4 ppg. Simmons also leads the team in blocked shots with 10 and ranks second in rebounds with 5.8 per game. The Wolfpack has led the ACC in scoring defense four times in his eight seasons as head coach, and ranked second in the league last season with just 66.1 points allowed. Heading into this season, Wolfpack opponents had averaged just 65.0 points per game under Sendek. NC State has been particularly effective when holding its opponent to 60 points or less in recent campaigns. During Sendek’s tenure, the Pack has held the opponent under that scoring mark 106 times, including 10 times last season and four times already in 2005-06. In other words, in 37% of its games under Sendek (110 of 296), the Pack has held the opponent to 60 points or less. In the past nine campaigns, the Pack posts an 94-16 mark when holding the opposition to 60 or less and has won 40 of its last 44 games when doing so. THE 'PACK' HORSE Every team needs a Packhorse - the guy who may not be the flashiest player on the court, but who carries the load. Junior guard Engin Atsür may not be a stallion, but he has definitely been NC State's Pack Horse in the last couple of seasons. Atsür was the only player to start every game for NC State last season and ranked second in minutes played. Engin Atsur This season, he leads the team in minutes (30.8 per game), is shooting 51% from the field, 39% on three's and 71% from the charity stripe. He ranks second on the team with 22 assists (to just 12 turnovers). Atsür ranks eighth in the ACC in assists, 15th in steals. and ninth in assistto- turnover ratio. But Atsür's biggest contributions come on the defensive end of the court. He leads the team in deflections (32), in steals (11) and ranks fifth on the team with 3.4 rebounds. FORCING FUMBLES NC State's opponents have averaged a whopping 17.4 turnovers per game in the early season, with all five foes turning the ball over at least 15 times. The opposition has tallied just 50 assists (10 per game) for a 0.6 assist-to-turnover ratio. NC State's turnover tally stands at 11.8 per game, but the team's 16.8 assists gives the Pack a solid +5.6 assist-to-turnover ratio. STATE STARTS FAST Last Saturday's game against Notre Dame in the Wooden Tradition marked NC State's fifth game in nine days. The Wolfpack opened the season with three games in three days in the Hispanic College Fund Classic, then had two days off before facing VMI, then two days off before the Notre Dame game. This marked the most games the Pack has played in the least amount of days to open the season since 1978-79, when Norm Sloan's squad played five games in nine days, posting a 4-1 record. The Pack must have used up all its three's the night before. State connected on 14 three-pointers against The Citadel, the most since Nov. 26 of last season against Campbell. For the season, the Pack is averaging eight three-pointers made per game (9.75 if you take out the Delaware contest). PACK POWERFUL VERSUS NONCONFERENCE COMPETITION NC State has posted a 96-31 record against non-conference competition under Herb Sendek (86-22 in the regular season) and posts an impressive 52- 5 home record against non-conference opponents since the Wolfpack began playing in the RBC Center in 1999-2000. If we come out with the defensive intensity we had against ND, then we will be in good shape. It was nice to see us hitting the boards with success for the first time in recent memory. The added depth we are using this season will be nice by the end of the season as well, although I'm not sure that our freshmen are ready to step in and be major contributors just yet.

On the other hand I still think we're not getting consistant ball movement and utilizing Simmons and Brackman enough. I saw very few back door cuts in that game as well. If we fall into prolonged streaks of settling for bad 3's as we've had a habit of doing from time to time in the last few years, we'll be in trouble if we don't come out hot.

In the end though, I think we will play a good game and it will come down to ball control. I like using Bethel, Grant, and Atsur as they each give us a different look when starting the offense. If we can shoot 40% or better, get to the line, and limit our turnovers we win. If we turn the ball over, I don't see any way for us to win against a quality team in a hostile environment (which our younger players really have experienced yet).

...because they played zone (and collapsing man-to-man in the first half, which has a pretty similar effect). It's very difficult to run cuts through the defense they played against us, although that cut along the baseline that Bethel made was beautifully executed.

I agree that we don't need to take bad 3's, but if we work the offense right we can get good looks. The major thing is just to settle down and work the ball around.

^^I'm not saying it was a horrible thing, just that even when they tried man defenses we didn't run too many back door cuts. We did a pretty good job thoughout most of that game of taking what was given to us and limiting many of our 3 point attempts to good open looks where our shooters had a chance to square up and set their feet. Hence the fact that we were around 50% from behind the line for most of the night. If we are patient and continue to work the offense like that we'll be hard to stop because we do have the depth and finally have the skilled inside personel to give teams headaches this season.
