trying to search through some rather heft pdfs and the search function does not seem to be working

I suspected that it was malfunctioning and searched a very common word that I can see immediately on the page ("and") and it returns no instances of the word

make sure PDf isn't a scanned image... can you highlight text using the text select tool?
