I graduated in 2004 with a B.A. I decided to take an online class this fall, not for any particular degree..just to take it. I haven't been able to keep up with the workload since I got a promotion at work. What happens if I don't pass the Audit class? Is this something that will affect me possibly applying to a grad school later on? Or does it not really make a difference?

is it actually possible to fail an audit class? i thought the difference between that and credit was that with audit you get AU, 0.00 hrs no matter what happens as opposed to U 0.00 hrs or S 1.00

You can get an unsatisfactory grade...i think the code is NR...for the audit not being recognized. I just don't know if something like this affects getting into another degree program at some point in time.

yeah you can get an NR, but it doesnt affect your gpa at all. You just have an NR on your transcript next to that class, but no one cares about that

If no one cares about an NR why do they have it at all? I mean why does Audit get any type of code by it? I guess I just don't understand why they would waste their time distinguishing between NR and AU if neither matters...

I'm also kind of confused. I believe there are 0.0 hr for credit courses that you can take (note: scholars form). I've actually failed that, they gave me a big whopping U on my transcript. I've heard people talk about the meaning of it, and apparently one guy was actually rejected for something by some uptight military dude that said it ment to him that this guy didn't take commitments seriously or something like that...but if you can take 0 hr credit courses, why are there also audit courses that are all 0.0 hrs and have the same kind of U/S or AU/NR distintion show up on the transcript? And how could a teacher decide to not pass someone auditing a class when they're not even supposed to be doing the work/tests/anything else in the class?[Edited on November 20, 2005 at 7:57 PM. Well my professor and I agreed at the beginning of the semester that i had to do the book report and the quiizzes for the class, but not the midterm or final. The book report is due tomorrow and I don't think I'll have it done in time which means I won't have a satisfactory grade...but I still just don't see why that matters??

bttt...anyone know?

The whole reason they have the NR grade is because some people audit classes to gain skills necessary to their job or an advanced degree. If you get an AU, then you've demonstrated that you've learned something. A NR means that you are not proficient in that subject matter. Someone could be really picky and give you shit about an NR after graduation, but they would be being really anal, and a simple "I was taking the class for my own enjoyment, but my responsibilities at work changed and I was unable to devote time to the class" should suffice if they ask.

conditions for an audit are usually sitting in and listening and participating, but they can be anythign you and the prof work out. If the prof asks you to do a book report for the audit, then you are supposed to do it. Usually they ask you to do things that help you get the most out of the class and that relate to participation. I audited a class in grad school and had to write 2 papers, but did not have to write the major research paper or take the final. The two papers were based on the readings and class discussions- fair game for an audit since participating is part of the requirement.
