Basically my computer restarts when I try to open the program. What could be the problem?

....as soon as you click the icon, while the levels are loading, while steam updates, ???More info.

My Steam account connects, it says "preparing to launch Half Life 2," the screen goes black, then it restarts.

you can write a letter to gabe newell telling him what a steaming pile of shit his software is.

I'd like to play the fucking thing first. Then I will assess its shit factor.
11/19/2005 12:52:12 PM
I'm just going to chuck it in the trash.
11/19/2005 12:56:45 PM
Have you ever played it on that machine before?
11/19/2005 1:12:32 PM
have you updated drivers for video card, sound card, etc?
11/19/2005 1:48:04 PM
take the side off of your computer case and set a window fan next to it
11/19/2005 3:27:32 PM
I have never played it on this machine before, but I am close to the recommended specs so I don't think hardware is an issue.
11/19/2005 4:05:18 PM
sounds like a driver issueeither that or maybe just kick your computer a few times
11/19/2005 6:44:18 PM
Tried kicking it...

I also looked around to see if there were any new drivers I needed for the GeForce 6200. I couldn't really find anything. Video drivers probably aren't an issue because I was able to run a pirated copy of HL2 for about 30 seconds before lack of Steam caused it to crap out
11/19/2005 7:17:29 PM
Did you try the simple stuff like uninstalling/reinstalling?
11/19/2005 8:05:40 PM
not yet, no. i did install a couple of discs and couldn't stay up to install the rest, so it was idle for a while between discs. that could have done it.

Driver or DirectX issue more than likely ... should be error logs somwhere (either windows or hl2 generated) detailing what is happening.
11/20/2005 9:57:34 AM
first i'd try using the newest directx, then i'd try reverting to directx 7 (which valve made sure to include support for in hl2 for older vid cards).you can use this tool to go back to dx7:http://www.freewebs.com/firecat/again, that's just what i'd do
11/20/2005 10:43:11 AM
sounds like a driver or directx issue to me.but yeah, things to try before giving up on stuff like this:uninstall the game, delete any folders it still left on your drive, reinstall it. make sure you also deleted any temporary install folders.install newer video drivers. (also, try uninstalling the device and downloading fresh drivers for it. sometimes you have the latest drivers, but they've become corrupted)check for newer versions of direct x.[Edited on November 20, 2005 at 1:12 PM. u have enough RAM, CPU strength and a PSU with adequate power?
11/20/2005 1:15:18 PM
1 GB DDR RAM; AMD Sempron 2800+; unsure about the power supply.
11/21/2005 10:27:35 PM
did you try the directx rollback?
