'97 240sx 100,000miles on it. New water pump installed right before I bought it.Just got my liscence plate/registration yesterday. Today I was driving on the outer beltline when steam started coming from under the hood. pulled into a parkinglot, the upper rad. hose was disconnected. I reconnected it, topped it off with antifreeze. Now when I drive the car stays cool (this according to the temp guage), but as soon as I come to a stop or slow it it starts to get above the "H". Also the radiator is hissing (not a good sign).Do you think this could be due to a thermostat/temp sensor...or did I just fu*k up the engine. Please help.

Air is in the rest of the system after you closed it up again.

if it's just happening at a stop, wouldn't that point to a cooling fan?

^ it's also when i'm driving slowly,I thought it may have gotten air in the system.guess i'll jack the front end up and try to bleed it out.

^^^/^^, or the pump not being replaced properly replaced. it's being cooled by the moving air through the radiator which could mean the water isn't circulating properlyto bleed air out, don't you just idle it, adding water with the tstat or rad cap off until it stops bubbling over?[Edited on November 18, 2005 at 3:01 PM. yeah i believe so, i've also heard to jack up the front end to let more air out...but running a car while jacked up doesnt sound like a good idea. anyways...if anyone wants to help me out i'd love it...i just dont wanna fuck something else up.

Its OK to jack it up while its running...The air is going to go to the hightest place it the system. If the rad cap is the hightest point you good to go....good luck

thanks, im about to go give it a try. if not i'll assume it's either the thermostat, or perhaps the antifreeze shorted something (like a fan) out

alright, it drank up a gallon of fluid (so there was a gallon sized bubble in there) need an adj. wrench to bleed it the rest of the way.

shit my car has a convenient bleeder screw thingie

the engine needs to be flushed out too replace the oil with water and run it at 4500 for 3 mins. clean it right up. ...for those who remembers the vw thread

Gimme a holler if you can't solve this one. I do work on the side.

I think i fixed it most of the way. Bled it out the rad cap as best I could, didnt have the right tools to bleed it out of the actual bleeder screw (might try again tommorow). I drove it around campus and it stayed cool - probably gonna take it by the dealer to get everything on it checked out since I just bought it anyways. Thanks for the help everyone (except JBaz)

if it got hot enough to blow the top hose off, then you need to at least throw a thermostat and cap on that sum bitch, my guess would be it overheated due to a stuck thermostat, overpressurized, and when then hose blew off, the sudden pressure change destroyed the thermostat, its probably in a few pieces, thats why it never warms up now. you are lucky you arent putting a new radiator in it

it warms up fine, and it never read "hot" before the hose blew off. I'll probably put a new thermostat in there just in case, but the hose was really loose - I think it just slipped off...also I think that the new water pump might have been pumping a bit to hard for the 8 year old rubber hose.It was overheating b/c I had an air pocket in the cooling system I hope - I just took it for a test drive after bleeding it and it didnt overheat.

did you check to make sure your cooling fan is operating properly?
11/18/2005 7:18:47 PM
fan's working fine. All I have up here is a few screwdrivers, if someone wants to give me a hand tommorow, it looks like I need like a 5/16 or a 7 or 8 socket wrench to properly bleed the system.

BTW, does anyone know where the nearest Nissan dealership is?
