I'm trying to install a hp printer, but when I go to printers and faxes and click "Add printer", i receive an error saying the print spooler service is not running, and it won't complete. I'm pretty sure it is a plug and read printer, so no new driver should be needed. Any suggestions?

start menu > run > services.msc > scroll down to print spooler and click start if not running or restart if it is. try installing again.

Make sure all the following services are turned on:• Application Layer Gateway Service • Network Connections • Network Location Awareness (NLA) • Plug and Play • Remote Access Auto Connection Manager • Remote Access Connection Manager • Remote Procedure Call (RPC) • Telephony

i dont know then. if this is XP i suggest doin the traditional spyware/adware/virus checks and then i would do a windows repair with the windows xp cd. someone else might know more of what to do with this problem but that's all i know to do.

What model printer?Print Spooler only has RPC as a dependency. You do not need the others.
