around 170. Maybe less. It's not an uber-powerful car. Engine: 3.0 liter VG30E. Not twin cam, not 4 valves per cylinder. Pretty damn tame.

thought it was 160, at least in 86...

160 sounds good.

160 n/a 200 turbo
11/10/2005 3:05:36 PM
yeah I almost bought an 89 Z31 turbo before I got my 7. I found one that looked really clean and was supposed to only have 40k miles on it or something. I called the guy about it and was going to go pick it up in Maryland. Of course then I remembered that I forgot to do a Carfax, and it turned out to have 240k miles instead

Z31's are cars people tend to DRIVE. The good thing is that the VG30E is good for 400k if treated well...if the damn injectors don't send it up in a fireball. The bad...those damn digital dashes, the automatic climate control system......and relatively little power, especially for the turbo Z31's.It's still half the pig that the S130 is, which is a good thing.

what's an S130? 200hp was damn good in 1984[Edited on November 10, 2005 at 4:56 PM. Reason : .]

yep thos damn leaky injectors. i drove an 86 turbo once it sounded good just didnt go anywhere kinda like my celica ...wait the celica doesnt sound good eitherl oll

it's funny, I wanted a Z so bad for so long... especially a Z32 TT, although I only had $ for a Z31 Turbo. Yet I ended up buying an Rx-7 and a Supra.

Ah. Didn't the Z31 and the S130 share pretty much the same suspension though? Seems like a Z31 is just a heavier S130 with more power and random shit like vibrating seats and stuff.
11/10/2005 5:12:21 PM
The suspensions are VERY similar in design. There are a few differences in shock and spring location on the back, which uses trailing arms on both cars. The fronts are almost identical, with a few differences in brake components. The Z31 naturally has bigger brakes. You can tell the two are kissing cousins everywhere. The Z31's interior is much more well thought out, though it shares a lot of styling cues with the S130.The Z31 is a much more refined, posh car. But I still prefer the L28E of the S130, even if it doesn't have the grunt of the VG30E. It can be built to have a lot more grunt.
11/10/2005 5:46:48 PM
which is a better motor, VG30ET or L28ET?
11/10/2005 5:59:55 PM
I still prefer the L28ET...I think it's more easily modified, and there's a shitload of stuff available for it.Both engines are damn near indestructible, but the VG30ET is more refined, and has crossflow heads to boot. The latest model L28ET's are the best of the L-series sixes, as they have the best head. For years, the L sixes had stainless liners cast into the exhaust ports to provide better afterburn for emissions reasons. The P90 and P99 turbo heads don't have these. They also have a combustion chamber designed to induce a high rate of swirl into the charge during compression. Also very favorable. Oh, and flattop pistons. Both engines will live on 15+ lbs of boost, though the stock systems on the S130's runs between 5 and 7. How lame. I'm not sure how much boost a VG30ET makes, but rest assured it's probably in the same range, given its power output. High levels of boost do require an HKS gasket or 0-ringing.

VG30ET makes about 5psi, no intercooler. I looked into this stuff when I was gonna buy a Z31... didn't seem like there was much aftermarket at all for it, but maybe I just didn't look in the right places. Everything seemed to be for the Z32.So umm with a name like zxappeal, why don't you have a 300+ rwhp 280zx?
11/10/2005 6:20:30 PM
I have a '79 280ZX, but it's been sitting on the back burner for about 7 years. About 5 of that was dating and marrying my soon-to-be-ex wife, and we just didn't have the money for me to put into the car. Add to that I didn't have time, with family obligations and all.Now I am separated, I have time again. But still no money; that's what my other threads are about. I can use all the extra money I can scare up.I'm really wet-dreaming about getting this thing back on the road, but I need to buy a few more tools and such to get going again. The first is a welder. The second is a finger brake. The third is a tubing bender. I have about everything else I need. The engine as it sits right now is a damn-near stock L28 with the N47 head (NOT one of the best powermakers, and the first with the stainless exhaust liners) shaved 0.040", and fully ported. They came factory with a 3-angle valve job, and that's what I went back with. I did all my own head work.Stock cam, but the towers are shimmed, and cam advanced a couple of degrees. I actually need to take this baby apart (the front and the top end) and rework a little bit. The valves need thicker lash pads, for one. The header I have on it doesn't fit really well, and I need to stick another joint in the steering shaft to clear it properly. But the ZX headers don't really appeal to me; the Z headers have a better design, so that's what I went with; hence the fitment problems.

ah the perennial vag vs. car conflict

No longer, though. At least not until next September when it gets to be divorce time.
