I've lived with my DRE's for so long that it's not worth my $41 to get fixed.
11/9/2005 3:00:57 PM
sony has been fixing them for free for a least 3 years now
11/9/2005 3:45:53 PM
worthless...most DRE's can be fixed in 10 min with a screwdriver...http://www.tweak3d.net/articles/ps2repair/http://www.gamingworldx.com/features/PlayStation2DiscReadErrorDRERepairGuide.shtml

I bought a used PS2 that doesn't play games with blue bottoms or ps1 games -- it just gives the familiar DRE. i haven't tried fixing it because i don't want to break it entirely. has anybody successfully fixed one that was giving DREs?

Sony fixed mine when the screwdriver didn't do it. Fo free.

yes but the fix for free deal has long since been expired. sounds like it'll cost me $41 plus shipping times two and i don't want to pay that much money.[Edited on November 9, 2005 at 4:12 PM. Reason : asdf ]

i bought mine used about 6 months ago. and i didn't know about the DREs until this summer because that was the first time i tried to play a blue disc game...

I sent mine in for free repair a few months ago. Just call them and they will give you a return number. Cost like $8 to UPS it... the fix and return it for free

i had the DRE thing about a year ago and got it fixed for free. it took them forever to do it though.

okay so i sat down tonight to try and fix my ps2 DRE problem. i followed the directions from the tweak3d.net link that rogueleader posted. before i started, my PS2 would read regular games but not blue disc games or ps1 games. i fiddled with the white dial and found a location where it would read both ps1 games and blue disc games but then it wouldn't read the regular silver bottom ps2 games. so it looks like i have to choose which i want more...grrrrrrr

cleaning works fine if your model isn't one with the fucked up laser...mine was...the dial thing didn't work, nothing worked...bought a slimline one and said fuck it to the cost....i really don't care and won't file for my claim even thou I had one of the model numbers

My PS2 works fine. Every once and a while it will lock up, but very seldomly.

i got one of those disc cleaner cd's. its got little brushes on it, and you put it in like a regular disc and as it spins, it cleans the laser. it worked perfectly. i had disc read errors everytime i tried to play anything, used that thing once, and it works like new now. you can get the disc cleaner for like 5-10 bucks. and you can use it multiple times. its not a 1-use-only sort of thing.[Edited on December 3, 2005 at 12:07 PM. ^ in addition to playing with the dial, i cleaned my laser with a qtip and some rubbing alcohol last night. but that didn't fix the problem. i can try one of the laser cleaning discs. i'm also willing to try the business about putting some tape on the discs -- seems like an easy thing to try with no consequences if it doesn't work.the link above from gamingworldx.com has instructions on how to alter the voltage that gets sent to the laser. that seems a bit more hard core to me -- dunno if i'm ready to try that just yet.
