Former presidents Bush and Clinton try to raise morale--and legal funds--at a besieged White House

Nov. 8, 2005 - Former Presidents George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton, who have earned worldwide acclaim over the past year for their relief efforts around the globe, embarked today on what they called their most challenging project to date: an emergency mission to the White House.

"When there is a disaster, it's every citizen's duty to get off the sidelines and do whatever he or she can do," the first President Bush told reporters as he arrived at the White House. "And this, by any definition, is a disaster."

The two former presidents appeared on television last night to make an appeal to the American people to provide relief, in the form of a legal aid fund, for the White House staff, many of whom are expected to lose their jobs and their offices in the wake of the current catastrophe.

In their initial visit to the White House this morning, former President Bush said that their first priority was to assess the damage and attempt to raise the spirits of those still working at the White House, adding, "Some of their approval ratings are so darned low, you heart just goes out to them."

President Clinton said that when he visited the Oval Office, he was struck by how gloomy and downcast the mood was there, telling reporters, "I remember having so many good times in that room,"

Elsewhere, after telling an audience in Panama City that Americans "do not torture," President George W. Bush amended his remarks somewhat, saying that he had momentarily forgotten the film career of Pauly Shore."

^^ It's political, sure, but it's satire. Mods can move it if they want to.
