Hey all,I have to take biochem 451 next semester and I wanted to know is it better to take it with Knopp or Sylvia...The bottom line is that I want to know with whom I can get a better higher grade. I don't care how the teacher dresses or if they pick their nose or not....I am just concerned about my grade.Thanx

State has grade distributions for old classes online somewhere.

I want student advice, not just some statistics from the grade distribution

it's about even and this topic has been covered beforeI'm pretty sure only biochemistry majors can get Knoppeveryone else who takes BCH gets Sylvia

yeah, major and honors take Knopp. Everyone else takes Sylvia.

Yep, only biochem majors and honors get Knopp. You're gonna get Sylvia.

i heard Sylvia makes everyone in the class point at you if you come to class late....is that true?I know I am going to be pointed at...hehe

I showed up late on the first day. When I walked in, the entire class said "YOU'RE LATE" in unison.

wtf...she is a freak
11/6/2005 9:29:20 PM
^^ she only does that for the first week or so, i heard

yeah, she only did it for the first week, however sometimes during the semester she will try to make an example out of someone who is late.

I don't think there's any sort of stringent requirement on who can take the Honors section...so you don't have to have Sylvia. I chose to take the Honors section with Knopp after seeing Sylvia in action with some of her students once - I am fond of my personal space and not fond of being "embarassed" as a teaching tool or communications tool. Knopp often seems like a smug know-it-all, but, honestly, he does know the stuff cold. I would take him if you can - he's tough, but doesn't seem like as much of a loose cannon. My old roomie took Knopp and Sylvia burst in on one of his problem sections and began screaming at people that they should know this or that and belittling them for not knowing. I dunno - I guess some people may find that behavior amusing, but I have never gotten the impression that she was very professional or courteous. I have friends, though, who have her as an advisor, are on her good side, and just love her.

She really cares about her students. You just gotta work hard I guess either way.

is Knopp's honors section more difficult than the regular section...I have heard there is no difference...how does it differ?

I don't believe it's harder, but you'll find some arguments on either side (I took Sylvia's, as I said above). And she really is a nice person. She's rough in class (although a lot of it settles down after the drop date), but she was always incredibly nice to me when I talked to her in her office.

For Knopp's honors section, you had to do a group project and attend 2 seminars and write 1 page summaries about them. No difference in the tests or anything.

dr. knopp looks like santa.

I don't think Santa would FAIL his students....but Knopp does.....

^Perhaps if you're a slack ass. The only people I know doing badly never study the material or go to class. You can really tell he loves teaching the class and when his students do well.

I went to his office and met him and spoke to him about the class. I met with Sylvia as well....so now I know who to take....thanks for everyone's help.....
