looking for a jap. pickup deciding between a '93 yota 4x4 with 124k extended cab, manual v6...or a 99 frontier 70k 5speed 4cylinder standard cab.i dont really need the extended cab although it would be nice to have.. although i doubt i will do any major 4x4n' with either of the 2 trucks i will take it offroad every now and again.. which one is more capable? im going to guess the yota but this is bc i dont really know anything about nissans.kthx.
11/5/2005 8:17:22 PM
i would go with the yota for reliability and less bullshit when it needs worki'm pulling that completely out of my ass, but its my gut feeling.
11/5/2005 8:20:46 PM
"nice shoes"
11/5/2005 8:21:08 PM
"wanna fuck"?
11/5/2005 8:22:54 PM
im thinkin yota too but the frontier is a lil newer and does have airbags.
11/5/2005 8:23:25 PM
I've worked on both extensively, and either is a good choice. I'm not a huge fan of Toyota's 3VZE engine, though many folks have had really good luck with them. See if the head gaskets have been replaced. The Frontier, on the other hand, has none other than your venerable KA24DE engine in it. Rock solid reliable, though not tons of power.Aftermarket 4wd stuff is much more available for the 'yota, though.
11/5/2005 8:25:01 PM
what's the use? you'll sell it in a month or so.
11/5/2005 9:13:15 PM
Having a 240 I'm partial to the KA, but honestly I would go with the toyota...My family always have had yotas and have had great success with them.
11/5/2005 9:18:51 PM
stay away from the v6, the chance of getting a lemon is much higher with one
11/5/2005 9:37:57 PM
is the yota lot cheaper?
11/5/2005 9:51:49 PM
nope only about 800 cheaper. i wont being doin major offroad stuff to either. maybe aftermarket bumpers and some decent tires, u know college kid stuff thinking the frontier is the better choice if i can get used to the damn single cab.no i wont be selling it in a week, since i will be buying a reliable car compared to the piece of shit i traded for before...besides it doesnt really matter im in no rush to buy either bc i have a 91 teggy i can drive around till i find something that i want.[Edited on November 5, 2005 at 10:20 PM. YOTA pickup, without question. That is pre-tacoma, incredibly well built truck. Look out for rust if it's been up north, and i'd get the 4cyl 22RE. The V6 is bad about blowing head gaskets, is inefficient for a 3.0L, and pretty much the worst motor toyota ever built. The 22RE is bulletproof. Pair that with a W series transmission, the strongest tranny in a yota pickup with the lowest 1st gear they produced. Stock 4.10 gears, can't go wrong. Will last forever, and EASY AS HELL to work on. But I'm biased that's what my wheelin' rig is.
11/6/2005 12:06:31 AM
what is it with Toyota and blowing headgaskets on 3 liter motors
11/6/2005 2:32:43 AM
ok thinkin of saving up for a 3.4 liter 96 4runner or newer. they are perty nice.. pickups are a lil uncomfy
11/6/2005 2:34:00 AM
I hope you're willing to spend a bunch for a 3.4L V6 Runner. Especially a 4x4. My wife and I tried to fine one reasonably priced for a while, but they retain they're value so well. You're going to have to spend a lot, even if you find one with 100,000+ miles. They're really nice, and the 3.4 V6 is a HUGE improvement upon the 3.0. We just couldn't really afford it, ended up getting an XJ. Anyway... good luck!
11/6/2005 3:02:16 AM
yeah i know im expecting to spend at least 7k for one. my bro paid 6k but when he drove it back from nj it needed a new engine put in...basically he got owned.
11/6/2005 3:11:20 AM
yota all the way. the 3.0 isn't nearly as bad of a motor as people make it out to be. even if the gaskets haven't been done on it, toyota will still do them for free should they fail.
11/6/2005 12:39:29 PM
my dad had this 95 4runner that was burg. with leather interior thing was hot i would take that anyday over a 97, also cheaper.. we'll see im leaning towards a runner/landcruiser (prob no l/c bc too expensive)
11/6/2005 1:14:49 PM
11/6/2005 1:18:46 PM
yeah, cruisers are nice and extremely solid trucks, but unfortunately way overpriced due to their somewhat cult following.
11/6/2005 1:23:37 PM
found a 4runner 96 but it's 2wd

If you want a REAL runner... check this out. 22RE, removable top. Ivan will probably back me up on this one http://www.nc4x4.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5360
11/6/2005 8:14:07 PM
^^ check your facts....96 was the first year for the 3.4.....
11/6/2005 8:15:57 PM
Oh my bad... that was standard on the SR5 and Limited, right?. I just sold my wife's 2Runner which was a '96 and had a 3.0L. I'm not a yota V6 expert, just had and seen bad experiences with the 3.0.[Edited on November 6, 2005 at 8:20 PM. Reason : .][Edited on November 6, 2005 at 8:42 PM. Reason : .]

i cant see picts of that baby i would get it if it looks good and its well within my budget
11/6/2005 8:38:40 PM
ok registered and saw picts. looks interesting 211k on the tranny?
11/6/2005 8:46:59 PM
'95 was the first year for the 3.4L...in the T100 only. We have one. Great truck. Great engine.'96 was the first year for the 3.4 in the 4Runner and the Tacoma.
11/6/2005 9:01:14 PM
Is this 3.0L engine the same one they put on the avalon?
11/6/2005 10:24:49 PM
No. The truck 3 liter is the 3VZ-EThe Avalon engine is the 1MZ-FE. Has twin cams per head and four valves per cylinder, as opposed to the 3VZ-E's single overhead cam and 2 valves per cylinder.
11/6/2005 10:30:56 PM
I assume that the avalon engine is better then?
11/6/2005 10:32:45 PM
Yep. Absolutely.
11/6/2005 10:43:07 PM
i hear avalons had probs with the oil gunking up or something when i was looking at them a couple months back. I dunno just heard it from several owners online. although my neighbor had one with 210k and gave it to his son last year.
11/6/2005 11:14:56 PM
That's a problem with not only the Avalon, but the 5SFE in the Camry as well.I remember getting a '93 Camry in the shop when I worked for Happy Jap's. It was SICK just how much carbon and coked up oil was in that engine. I was afraid to touch anything because I was worried about a big chunk or twenty breaking off and plugging up an oil gallery.Frequent oil changes if your driving is primarily city. Highway driving is the best, hands down, especially with these engines. If they are looked after, both these engines will damn near last forever.[Edited on November 6, 2005 at 11:28 PM. there was a recall IIRC in regards to 5sfe oil gunking in certian year camrys.

if the yota has the head gaskets done under the service campaign by toyota, there is no reason the 3vze won't last 200K. The next thing to go wrong will probably be bearings, but that happens to any engine with extremely high miles.BTW in case you don't know the specifics, in 1990 toyota took out the asbestos content on the head gaskets for the 3vze, which caused them to fail prematurely. A service campaign was initiated to address the problem, and the gaskets were replaced with a better design. If any engine damage resulted from a gasket failure, toyota replaced the shortblock for free. i beleive it effects 1990-1994 3vze's. Also, I want a 22re 5 speed yota 4x4 X-cab, who's got one and wants to trade for a 4runner?
11/7/2005 7:40:12 AM
oh, and I have personally seen 2 95 toyota "pickups" , not tacomas, with the 3.4 5vze V6. That would be a nice truck.

11/7/2005 10:29:12 AM
11/7/2005 10:41:03 AM
It's probably older than you want, its a 93 w/ 143K on it, V6 auto, leather 4x4, average condition
11/7/2005 10:43:07 AM
I'm looking for a kinda in between a nice truck and a pile of junk. I want an extended cab, 22RE, 4x4. I've got the funds to sas the 4runner, but i think i'd rather do a 4 cyl pickup b/c its easier to do dual cases and i wouldn't have to worry about converting it to leafs in the rear . The V6 and auto run fine and are in great shape, but they are expensive to replace, and I doubt they'll hold up too long under large tires[Edited on November 7, 2005 at 10:48 AM. Reason : .]
11/7/2005 10:48:10 AM
I'm with you all the way buddy. I love my 94.5 pickup w/ the 22RE. The motor of course is weak but frickin' bulletproof, and with gearing and/or dual cases, it's enough power. I SAS'd mine and it's been great, like a whole new truck. Dual cases is next on the list. My buddy with a '90 SAS'd pickup, and another with Ivan's old Runner (he wouldn't recognize it now) are running MC07 dual case adapters from marlin and I can't wait to get mine.
11/7/2005 10:53:41 AM
PS... If I run across anything I'll be sure to let you know. I got my pickup for $600 just gotta find folks at the right time.
11/7/2005 10:54:31 AM
^ plz let me know if you find a cheap toy truck. i'd like to to daily drive/mod later. but i can't ever find one decent under 1000
11/7/2005 11:06:23 AM
I've always got my eyes open for anything Pre-Tacoma Yota. Assuming none of my wheelin' buddies are interested, I'll post it up.
