I am thinking about actually starting to save money for my jeep instead of spending it on useless crap. smart idea IMHO, but anyways....I was just wanting to get some info on what 401's came in. I have found one for 500 but it is in LA so was trying to get some info on where i might find them locally. Jeepman mentioned that they would most likely come with some decent axles so maybe get a beat up truck that isn't running with all of it in there and throw it in the YJ. any help would be nice. Yes, right now this is just dreaming but hey, I am aloud to do that
11/3/2005 3:08:17 PM
wagoneers, J trucks, errr some AMC cars (but rare) like the amx. How about something fuel injected?
11/3/2005 3:10:36 PM
nah...looking for carb, gonna run propane. even if i don't upgrade engines, my 2.5 is shot so was gonna look for some of those freebies with carbs that some of the older guys just give away after they get their 350's and shit. I have the fuel injected now but the money saving of propane, and on a trail only rig, very enticing (sp). i don't know...dreams...just dreams
11/3/2005 3:15:48 PM
why not just go with a 360, i'm sure they're much more plentifulunless its just a rare thing you want with the 401
11/3/2005 3:20:58 PM
the rare part is kinda a part of the motivation, and just looking for ideas. nothing is set...i am not in the mind frame of just a 401, but want more info on it and stuff
11/3/2005 3:24:32 PM
you will never find one.
11/3/2005 6:23:37 PM
401's came out in '71. You can find them in AMC Matadors, Rebels, Ambassadors, Javelins (I think), some Jeep trucks...Look at an AMC 390 if you can find one. Good option as well. And there's nothing wrong with the 360, which is MUCH more plentiful.
11/3/2005 6:31:00 PM
dude put an ls1 motor in there.i don't even like chevys but they're cheap and can make around 350 hp and are all over ebay.not to mention they're fuel injected which will save you a ton of time on the trails.[Edited on November 3, 2005 at 6:35 PM. Reason : .]
11/3/2005 6:35:14 PM
yeah but LS1's already make 350hp+, 5th gen vettes being a no brainer and even the f-body cars being underrated at 305-320he probably at least wants to stick with some variant of Chrysler
11/3/2005 8:06:11 PM
you have about as much of a chance of finding a 401 as you do finding a javelin that hasnt been wrapped around a treehttp://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/AMC-401-408HP-HIGH-PERFORMANCE-BALANCED-ENGINE_W0QQitemZ8010133632QQcategoryZ33615QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem[Edited on November 3, 2005 at 10:46 PM. amc motors have quite a following, bulltear.comthey tend to be very robust, one downside is a weak timing cover.btw, the 360 AMC and 360 mopar are completely different engines that happen to share the same displacement. All amc V8's have front distributors, which some people like. chrysler 440's have front dist. but the chrysler 360 does not.
11/4/2005 7:18:06 AM
Why not a 5.0, get whatever FI in the late 80s is(MPI) and it is something like a 3 wire hook up. FI is nice on the trail. Save some wieght over the AMC, too.
11/4/2005 9:12:50 AM
ok everyone suggesting fuel injection, it def. is a good idea, but southern stated he would be running propane, which eliminates the advantages of fi, angles, etc. so the fuel injection suggestions don't really matter. the propane would make up for it.
11/7/2005 12:17:40 AM
i didn't catch that... yes propane wouldwhat is the point of running propane other than a cleaner burn ?
11/7/2005 3:07:32 AM
with propane an engine can run upside down, it has many of the advantages of fuel injection. it is also around 110 octane, and it around 1.40 a gallon right now. wait for southern to reply, he just did a speech on propane and propane conversions.
11/7/2005 10:31:21 AM
i will give you a dollar to tell me where you get propane for 1.40 a gallo[Edited on November 7, 2005 at 10:48 AM. Reason : Locally i mean]
11/7/2005 10:47:32 AM
i'm not sure locally, i just know southern told me nationally that was the average? and are you talking about bbq propane tanks, or propane that cars can run on?[Edited on November 7, 2005 at 11:04 AM. Reason : .]
11/7/2005 11:03:48 AM
propane is propane... i'd like to know of anyone getting it for that cheap too.
11/7/2005 12:36:36 PM
^Did that change with the "magnums" or the ODB-II?
11/7/2005 12:41:39 PM
"magnums"
11/7/2005 12:46:23 PM
well i guess in a jeep it doesn't matter just cause you're not going to make too much power either way.the main thing is... there just isn't parts for them i'm a ford guy and i'm gonna tell you on a trail i want a small block chevy just cause if something breaks more than likely SOMEONE will have parts cause every one has an sbc of some sort it seems 327s 350s 383s and 400s are all over the trails.
11/7/2005 1:33:07 PM
that has absolutely nothing to do with whether they are good motors or not... sure parts aren't as common as a sbc, but they're not extremely uncommon either. stock parts are readily available at any parts store, and aftermarket stuff is out there.
11/7/2005 1:58:27 PM
ok to each his own but i know when i was in a 383 powered fj and we broke a valve spring there were 3 people w/ spares ever since then i think i'd have a sbc in any trail vehicle that isn't a diesel. and know it wasn't perfect but until we could get a matching replacement it worked great. 11/7/2005 4:22:21 PM
ok well, you can keep your dollar. the average wasn't just national, it was including cananda. a lot of my research was from canadian companies. They have been using propane on all sorts of vehicles for some time. I called Carolane in Hillsboro, they listed a gallon at 2.389, or somewhere around there. So ok...not at 1.40, but there are plenty more reasons for running propane, the savings, which even at 2.389 is saving, is just one of them. I could list many more but I gotta run to practice. I can give plenty more information if you would like later. Jeepman sorry for the bad info.
11/7/2005 4:29:53 PM
have you found anywhere that fills within say, 10 miles of campus?
11/7/2005 4:36:57 PM
There was a website that would bring up all within a inputed zip code and it showed one in Garner. Don't remeber the site though.
11/7/2005 4:40:23 PM
^how's clt treatin ya man?
11/7/2005 4:54:22 PM
what about uhaul on capital in between wade ave./peace st.? i used to get grill tanks filled there.
11/7/2005 6:01:25 PM
you can get propane tanks filled pretty much anywhere, including where you get your grill tanks filled, issue with that is you're gonna pay more because their prices are set for the smaller amounts, not at that bulk. i don't know of anything all that close though I am sure there is something. If you plan ahead and buy a spare tank then the distance won't be that big of an issue. Just takes some planning.
11/7/2005 7:28:56 PM
i fail to see the benefits of propane when you're already doing a motor swap into a fi vehicle. much of the wiring, fuel lines, etc. are already there. the only way i'd ever do pane is if i had a motor that didn't readily accept an fi system or i had an already carbed vehicle (even then i may not do it).
11/7/2005 7:46:41 PM
oh, and that's all considering it's a trail rig only. forget it for anything that sees any amount of street miles.
11/7/2005 7:47:42 PM
his would be for trail only, maybe driving to and from, but if southern ever converted it would be pane bc he would be going to a bigger engine, and dropping coin on a bigger fi engine prolly wouldn't be in the budget
11/7/2005 7:51:31 PM
definately WILL NOT be in the budget

I'd bet you could swap in a MAF 5.0 for less than a LPG 401.
11/7/2005 9:10:28 PM
you're prolly right, but then it's not JEEP!
11/7/2005 9:38:04 PM
^ all the more reason. I've got a bitchen CJ5 that'll never see the trail cause it'll break before I get there.[Edited on November 8, 2005 at 7:31 AM. Reason : Not talkin shit, jeeps just take more work]
11/8/2005 7:31:18 AM
It's a Jeep. You are only supposed to keep the frame and tub.
11/8/2005 7:40:28 AM
well, if you want to get technical putting a 401 in a wrangler isn't exactly staying true to the brand either...
11/8/2005 10:20:37 AM
^, ^^, ^^^. i guess i can't really talk either. my shit isn't all jeep so i'm going to break down and agree. a 401 isn't true to the jeep brand, but it's like jeep's daddy, haha. and i'm going to build my jeep out of chevy and ford later on. looking for a 14 bolt, so i have no room to talk. i retract my previous statement. haha
11/8/2005 11:20:32 AM
11/8/2005 11:23:31 AM
btw, i've got a perfect axle combo for a jeep if you're interested. d44 front and a ford 8.8 rear. both fullwidth, ~65-67 inches wms-wms. the d44 currently has 5x4.5 outers, but nick has some 5x5.5 outers to match the 8.8.
11/8/2005 11:25:48 AM
i have an 8.8 already, if i do a new axle combo it's gonna be 1 ton. and if i do get a 14 i'm gonna shave a bitch i'll let baryn know though, he might be interested. pm me the price and i'll let him know
11/8/2005 1:48:23 PM
asking $400 with the 5x5.5 outers included. this is an 8.8 from an f150, little bit stronger than an explorer/ranger 8.8. d44 is from a dodge, passenger drop.
11/8/2005 1:59:31 PM
what kind of gears? stock perches on em? and does the 8.8 have drums? i'm guessin so, but just to make sure[Edited on November 8, 2005 at 3:41 PM. Reason : .]
11/8/2005 3:41:19 PM
4.10's in the 8.8, 3.55's in the d44. stock perches on the d44, 8.8 has had them cut off. yep, stock (large) drums.
11/8/2005 4:12:46 PM
any pics or way I could swing by the shop with jeepman sometime to check them out? not today but sometime this week or next maybe? don't have the cash right now, trying to sell my hardtop, but would like to check them out and keep my options open.
