Is it morally wrong to hold a interview for a job over the phone while at my present job. I did this yesterday and I wonder if I could get in trouble for this. I also wonder if I get a job offer if I could use that as a bargaining chip for a raise at my present job...hmmm

i'm sure more than one person has done that before, but i don't think it's a good idea to look for anotehr job or conduct an interview for another job while on the company clock that you are currently working for. if you did it during your lunch hour, over a cell phone, away from the office then i don't see a problem. but i know when our boss found our receptionist looking for another job and updating her resume while at work she got a firm talking to...didn't get fired. but was basically told to do that on her own time.

and definitely on the job offer being used to get a raise at current job

It could be. You're using your company's resources to aid potential competition. It really depends on your company's phone use policy.

This is a great tactic. If you have a future at your present company, they will pay more to keep you. Otherwise, jump ship.

I wouldn't say it's morally wrong, but it is unethical at worst, and risky at best.

Yes, you can get fired for using company time and resources of your present job to look for another job. If you need to keep this job until you have another sure thing, i'd be careful.

I scheduled a phone interview during lunch...

I was outside the building on my cellphone, not on company time...

I didn't feel bad about it at all...

got the interview (I love all expense paid interview trips)... turned down the offer

still work at company A (till december )

I agree this is definitely risky. Depending upon your company's policy, you could certainly be violating their rules for use of equipment... not that they would have to have this kind of policy in place to fire you. Since NC is a work at will state, they can pretty much fire you anytime w/o much reason.

It might work as a bargaining chip... I have known it to work before. Just tread lightly. Even if you are leaving, you don't want to burn bridges. Give them a chance to keep you, and if they don't make the effort, write a nice letter of resignation.

Given that you didn't use company resources ... meh, they might tag you for doing it on company grounds. Might also be some policy about "personal phone calls", but I don't know if they can hold you to anything otherwise.
