how is this better than a personalized google.com homepage?

the interface is a little cleaner and theres definately more expandibility with the gadgets.my yahoo has them completely whipped for content right now though.

Ok, let's start over (mostly). If you want to discuss the topic, feel free to post.If you just want to crap a thread because it's not technical enough for you, go to chit chat. This thread is just as valid as any other thread in tech talk.

is this the same thing as windows onecare live?

the one big thing you lose switching from google/ig to live is your gmail access...thats good if you use hotmail instead of gmail but who does that?

thing is though, someone could probably write a gadget for live to view your gmail (or other webmail) account. You cant do that with google.com/ig

i haven't seriously used hotmail in years. i switched to outlook a few years back for ncsu imap and now i use it at work. for personal stuff i've slowly been using gmail more in the last year or so. it might be interesting to try a new hotmail address

when i tried it at work today the header loaded in IE but nothing else on the page loaded and there were a lot of JS errors. And it all loaded, but didn't render correctly in FireFox. Joel Spolsky confirms he has problems with IE too and isn't terribly impressed overall with this half-producthttp://www.joelonsoftware.com/items/2005/11/02.html

here's screens of the launch event:http://www.flickr.com/photos/niallkennedy/sets/1269791/obviously they have a lot to figure out yeti am more facinated with the larger overall scope of this. i remember reading about it 4-5 years ago about how computers of the 'future' are basically going to be terminals where all your information is online and all your software will be subscription based, i doubt this will become universal but this is a step in that direction, the biggest hurdle imho: privacy[Edited on November 2, 2005 at 9:38 PM. And his biggest roadblock is privacy.I suppose in this future, fiber lines to every room right?

you have all your emails on a friggin email server on the Internet. What's more of a security concern than that?
11/2/2005 10:38:24 PM
i didn't say it was my biggest roadblock, i thought it was the biggest hurdle for * to overcome with the general public, look at the concern and hype over google web accelerator and google desktop as well as gmail when it first came outsee:http://www.google.com/search?&q=%22google+web+accelerator%22+privacy+concerns+OR+fears&btnG=Searchhttp://www.google.com/search?&q=gmail+privacy+concerns+OR+fears&btnG=Searchhttp://www.google.com/search?&q=%22google+desktop%22+privacy+concerns+OR+fears&btnG=Search[Edited on November 2, 2005 at 11:02 PM.
