So after the last wheeling trip at uwharrie everyone thought I stripped my hub....turns out the ring gear has been reduced to rubbish.....i think a S.A.S. is in the works... if anyone has any leads on a toyota front axle... i am in need...thanks...[Edited on November 1, 2005 at 11:15 PM. lol, nice. i thought the hub was stripped when you pulled the cap? i never looked at it.
11/1/2005 11:07:32 PM
damn, that cv shaft WAS spinning though. nice woork [Edited on November 1, 2005 at 11:39 PM. Reason : .]

If you're looking for someone to do the SAS, which I doubt you are, but my friend and I have done two and always looking for a little extra cash.
11/2/2005 12:32:25 PM
didnt think i'd ever see that from a yota, that musta been a poorly hardened ring gear. hell i managed to twist a pinion shaft before and didnt strip any teeth, it just welded the bearings together and locked up
11/2/2005 12:36:26 PM
^I've seen two stripped yota ring gears and one chipped. The two that were stripped were stock 4.10 and open, the chipped was 5.29 and locked. Both stripped accounts were on a hill climb or obstacle where the driver was heavy on the skinny and then hit a bump or rock, the wheel went in the air, spun up to a high speed, then slammed down and grabbed.... pop, grind, no mo go!you need to wheel harder j/k
11/2/2005 12:48:57 PM
thats what happened to this one, wheel off the ground spinning at 35 mph and slammed onto a rock. What suprised me was that the ring gear broke before the hub (warn) or a cv. Chris (dcwalton) and I have got a pretty good parts list together for the sas. Probably gonna use marlin's hanger and front springs (or maybe toy rears up front) and hysteer. make our own shock mounts and that sort of little stuff. The idea is to weld the hanger on the front before cutting the IFS off, as well as mount the rear shackle tubes. That way we can grind the IFS off and hang the axle in the same dayI found a straight toy front hub to hub for 200, but I think thats a little high. Gonna try and trade a guy with a yota junkyard two complete IFS assemblies for a toy front axle and our choice of 3rd member, hopefully a V6 with the same ratio[Edited on November 2, 2005 at 1:01 PM. I just ordered the hanger kit from marlin and the axle rebuild kit, now I am setting out to find an axle..
11/2/2005 2:55:24 PM
Yeah, my buddy (the first SAS) used an All-pro kit that they don't make anymore, and we fab'd all the stuff for mine (budget truck). The cross-over steering is a ghettofied set up that was supposed to be temporary, but has been running for a year or so. I want to get Marlin's high steer kit and a dual case adaptor. Those are the "on-deck" projects for my trail rig. Good luck with the SAS man, it's so great once it's done... like a whole new truck. I'll ask around for a hub-to-hub axle for you. Are you picky about year (as far as gussets) or not? I'll keep my eyes open.
11/2/2005 3:12:15 PM
i am trying to find one 81-85 if possible
11/2/2005 3:41:57 PM
ah... you want the full gusset, and rightly so! they're hard to come by.
11/2/2005 4:06:21 PM
i found one from a 79... but i figured if i'm gonna do it, i might as well do it all right the first time...so im gonna keep looking for a little while
11/2/2005 4:10:58 PM
the FULL gusset is only 85. 84 has a partial. anything else post 81 doesnt have much of anything. not a big deal, it's easy enough to add one if you really care about it. $200 isn't a bad deal at all for a complete one in decent shape.[Edited on November 2, 2005 at 4:12 PM. Reason : .]
11/2/2005 4:11:51 PM
I have an 81 front toy axle complete hub to hub, I'd take $180 for. It's on my land in the mtns., but I could go get it if you wanted it.
11/2/2005 4:26:20 PM
i dunno if this is his number anymore, but theres a guy in lil washington with a buncha old yotas in his junkyard. heres the number i have, his name is WG if the number works. 252-945-3527. if that dont work, i know some guys at home in greenville that know him also, and prolly have his number. i dont have their number either, but i can get it and i think biglueram knows them also. His name is everette, so ask ivan for everette and thems number if that number i gave ya dont work.
11/2/2005 4:54:06 PM
^lol, feed him enough beer he'll just start giving you stuff. the head and wood cleaned him out of most of his good toy stuff i believe.[Edited on November 2, 2005 at 5:24 PM. Reason : .]
11/2/2005 5:24:01 PM
haha, last time i was there, he was feedin us beer
11/2/2005 11:57:46 PM
Damn, that hub wasn't completely stripped, but from what I saw of it I don't think it would last much longer. Atleast that help make up your mind about the front locker and a SAS. Hopefully you can get some money out off the IFS lift.Personally, for the front axle I would go with a Waggy 44, or even a cut down fullwidth. I just don't like the idea of spacers and wheels with little BS to get a desired width. The turning radius just suffers too much.
11/3/2005 9:05:08 AM
I say go with a stock Yota Axle, you won't have any problems untill you lock the front, then get you some 4340 chrome moly longfields: http://www.toyotasuperaxles.com/
11/3/2005 9:24:21 AM
we considered a waggy 44 but things like making a hybrid driveshaft, moving the perches, brake compatability, and hybrid steering contribute to more down time. Also, the compatibility of parts is nice with all toy stuff. It is a venerable option and I guess not entirely out of the question, although chris did just buy the knuckle rebuild and bearing for the yota.as far as width goes, this seems to be the best option:from sky manufacturing[Edited on November 3, 2005 at 9:31 AM. I think the $65 heat/freeze treat on the stock birfs and a pair of $100 chromoly shafts is the way to go for most wheeling in NC. You can pop 2 or 3 for the price of the supershafts[Edited on November 3, 2005 at 9:29 AM. Reason : .]
I know where you can get either a Solid front axle or a replacement for your independent. let me know if you are interested.
11/3/2005 6:30:21 PM
Just a little update, i have a front axle from an 85, and i have ordered both the rebuild kit for the axle and the hanger kit from marlin, so as soon as the stuff comes, i will proceed to weld the hanger on, and meanwhile i have to locate a v6 3rd for the front diff. as well as order the springs, high steer, and u bolt flip...
11/8/2005 11:40:44 AM
sweet. i think i've got some waggy main leaves and some other misc. leaves if you want to build a good front pack.
11/8/2005 12:08:19 PM
Built a stand tonite for the axle to sit on during the rebuild, and got started grinding off the brackets that wont be used.
11/9/2005 12:23:14 AM
i have stripped 2 5.29's to date. whats springs are you gonna run? i ran 44044's and was very happy with them. i have a friend with the marlins and i am very inpressed with them.
11/9/2005 1:56:13 PM
marlins are the plan at 189 a pair
11/9/2005 3:03:36 PM
For Marlin stuff check here, might be cheaper to get it from Salisbury than to pay shipping.http://www.nc4x4.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5660
11/9/2005 3:23:41 PM
that looks very bad, good luck with it
11/9/2005 3:35:41 PM
this sucks. nc4x4 is down as is marlincrawler.com TWW is not enough to entertain me on a friday morning @ work
11/11/2005 7:45:53 AM
^x2... and I get bored of reading rant after rant on Pirate. At least i'm taking a 1/2 day today and getting in the deer stand this afternoon
11/11/2005 9:01:20 AM
half my office is out today too! btw does anyone know why marlin's is closed (probably the move but i dunno) I've got an order I placed a week ago and haven't heard anything about it.
11/11/2005 9:03:37 AM
I don't know either, but like you, I assume it has to do with the change of ownership/restructure/facility move. All of the feedback about the change has been positive, except for that BS allegedly from AllPro
11/11/2005 9:07:06 AM
well despite all the praise marlin gets from pirate and the like, our experience hasn't been so good. The plan was to get the hanger welded up and then order springs and steering, well its been three weeks and the hanger hasn't even been shipped yet, so we waited on ordering the springs / steering. So yesterday the price on those parts went up $100!!Tried calling, line busy all day yesterday. This experience could have been much better, hopefully chris can get in touch with him today and maybe get the rest of the parts for last weeks prices
11/15/2005 7:48:52 AM
^^ I just read that the deal to move fell through, nm the previous post
11/15/2005 9:48:57 AM
marlin can be slow... i'm pretty sure Tuite has had some extended wait time on things he's gotten from there i believe. i know one was his tacoma trans, but that was kind of a custom deal. IIRC, the 4wd stuff isn't his primary business, he runs a regular repair shop.
11/15/2005 11:10:53 AM
marlin finally sent me an item shipped notification... maybe i can get this project underway pretty soon....
11/22/2005 11:54:21 AM
soo we had some time to kill this week waiting for parts. Chris obtained a factory e-locker w/ harness, solenoids, and switch from a tacoma. We swapped the whole taco axle in and wired it up tonight, we'll get pictures up soon.
11/23/2005 10:42:25 PM
sounds sweet. when you sas'ing the runner?
11/24/2005 2:45:09 PM
this spring I think... my plans change all the time though. I have the axle (rebuilding it now)
11/24/2005 6:04:32 PM
my parts came in from marlin(a few things missing from the boxes, but their making it right), ordered the high steer, front and rear u bolt flip kits, rotors, i am almost finished rebuliding the axle....soon as i get out for christmas break i will start grinding off the ifs, and begin the real fun...the e-locker made a huge difference in the truck performance from what i can tell just from playing around........if anyone knows where i can get some reasonably priced stainless brakelines or some long-travel shocks let me know... .[Edited on November 29, 2005 at 8:44 PM. Reason : .]
11/29/2005 8:43:30 PM
just put some 300zx lines on. much cheaper than stainless. unless you go with high dollar stuff, stainless lines are a gimmick.
11/29/2005 11:23:22 PM
if they are long enough i'll do that, i just knew that i was gonna need some much longer ones....
11/30/2005 9:11:48 AM
they're plenty long enough. unless you're building a 12" suspension or something.
11/30/2005 10:36:39 AM
update: i have all the parts from marlin now....highsteer, front and rear u-bolt flip kit, new brake rotors, hanger kit, and the axle for the most part is rebuilt with new everything....all i need now is springs, brake lines, and rear shackles....i plan to build a rear pack from some spring packs i have, and top just make some simple rear shackles....but if anyone has two rear packs from a straight axle toyota they want to sell let me know....the plan is to finish it by christmas...[Edited on December 6, 2005 at 4:21 PM. ^NICE! I'll ask around about stock yota rears, I think RKBJR (on nc4x4 and yotaman.com/fourm) has a bunch of yota parts he's wanting to get rid of. If you don't mind, how much did you pay for your marlin high steer? Did you get forged or billet? Did you get just the arms or the kit w/ TR and DL and the FJ TRE's? It seems like the price has gone up in the last month or two.
12/6/2005 4:33:59 PM
Luckily i got the complete high steer for 349 plus shipping (right before the hike in price), marlin was really helpful on the phone and my order actually went through much quicker via telephone than my previous web order...
12/6/2005 5:57:26 PM
i've got two waggy main leaves, they'd be a nice base for a pack.
12/6/2005 6:02:57 PM
he also got billet arms for the 349 price, I don't know if it was accidental or they felt sorry b/c they must up his first order
