google: peer guardian
11/1/2005 5:47:10 PM
so how many college students country wide have been caught?now for some division....
11/1/2005 5:53:44 PM
according to a study by Wired magazine, 40% of internet traffic is through bittorrentshalf of it being porn, the other half being movies/tv shows
11/1/2005 5:55:33 PM
if you are affraid of getting caught you could always......buy your shit.
11/1/2005 5:55:49 PM
^^half aint pornbut yea...torrents are probably at least 30 percenti question how they would get these numbers
11/1/2005 5:58:49 PM
^ you're right, their analysis is wrong. you win[Edited on November 1, 2005 at 5:59 PM. Reason : their]
11/1/2005 5:59:29 PM
so with peerguardian..its safe?
11/1/2005 5:59:48 PM
if we tell you it's safe no matter what will it matter - just go download and go to jail
11/1/2005 6:03:04 PM
going to jail?im sorry you must not understand the laws correctlythey can FINE, but not take you to jail
11/1/2005 6:05:03 PM
yes. they can't take you to jail for illegal activities. you're right.
11/1/2005 6:07:00 PM
is it $250,000 and/or 5 years in jail for piracy?
11/1/2005 6:08:16 PM
11/1/2005 6:08:49 PM
haha you seriously need to do some research, buddy
11/1/2005 6:08:53 PM
11/1/2005 6:11:40 PM
i'm willing to bet i have more experience with people being arrested due to piracy - and yes it's more rare than a fine - but it does happen[Edited on November 1, 2005 at 6:15 PM. Reason : hell - a regular tww poster did time for it]
11/1/2005 6:13:29 PM
they executed a guy in Malaysia for mass-duplicating DVDsand burnt his family alive
11/1/2005 6:13:31 PM
im pretty sure you have to do more than just download a couple of torrents to go to jail.like downloading mass amounts of DVD's and selling them online.
11/1/2005 6:16:28 PM
you might be suprised what it takes
11/1/2005 6:18:01 PM
I got a warning letter last semester about bittorrent usage but nothing ever came of it. I've dropped the habit, though, just to be safe.]
11/1/2005 6:20:56 PM
I don't use BitTorent at all.I think it's use should be banned in apartment complexes...I mean isn't bandwidth sharing a co-operative responsiblity?
11/1/2005 6:22:43 PM
^^how often were you using it? as in how much stuff were you downloading[Edited on November 1, 2005 at 6:23 PM. Reason : ]
11/1/2005 6:22:51 PM
it wasn't that I was using it a lot, it was that I downloaded something that MPAA was apparently tracking. Got a nice little email from someone on campus responsible for dealing w/ this. Did the whole "hallelujah, I'm a changed man" song and dance.Didn't hear any more from them, but I'm not planning on trying my luck again.
11/1/2005 6:26:56 PM
they are threatening civil lawsuitsnot criminal
11/1/2005 6:34:19 PM
who is they - you aren't inferring that only 1 group is going after people that pirate are you?
11/1/2005 6:35:26 PM
99.99%
11/1/2005 6:36:18 PM
that's like saying 99.99% of people that get caught for drugs only get a fine b/c the people that get caught with everyday shit are much more numerous than the ones that get caught at the higher up level - thus we can conclude that almost all people that get arrested for drugs just pay a fine
11/1/2005 6:38:07 PM
11/1/2005 6:38:48 PM
All I have to say is that if you really gotta pirate media...why not just go the traditional route and make copies of already pirated media...using BitTorent is such a drag on my bandwidth.
11/1/2005 6:40:38 PM
a lot of things arent even released in the US (movies, certain tv shows, etc)
11/1/2005 6:43:53 PM
that's a weak excuse
11/1/2005 6:45:11 PM
weak excuse? pretty valid if you see my bittorrent list
11/1/2005 6:47:26 PM
i have to agree w/ DoubleDown on this one. I used bittorrent to pirate some shit in my time, but it's also how I usually wind up getting my ISOs for any linux distro I want to test out. I could use a ftp server and be at the mercy of 1 server (or x # of mirrors) or use a distributed setup like bittorrent. For a 700 meg download, guess which I'd prefer?
11/1/2005 6:53:19 PM
In the case of Linux ISOs, I doubt any BitTorrent seed could be faster than a local mirror...especially when you wanna download Redhat/Fedora.
11/1/2005 6:56:18 PM
and in the case of smaller distros not mirrored around here? Or not-so-small distros in the same situation? Knoppix being my case in point. I'll admit I didn't actually try the VA server they offer, but I remember getting good results from their bittorrent download. For the most part, all I'm really saying is that they both have their uses.]
11/1/2005 7:00:26 PM
11/1/2005 7:01:38 PM
lookI am all about P2P for legal purposes but your BitTorrent kills my neighborhood connection.
11/1/2005 7:01:45 PM
11/1/2005 7:03:11 PM
11/1/2005 7:05:28 PM
haha i know who this mf is
11/1/2005 7:06:11 PM
thats probably why they gave him a light sentence. cause he has bad taste.
11/1/2005 7:06:13 PM
"The FBI found more than $50 million in music and movies on Dhaliwal's computer."HOLY SHIT!and he's indian...bet his parents want to burn him alive.
11/1/2005 7:07:09 PM
it seems i just had a conversation about torrnets with someone the other day.......man too bad i'm a dumbass and cant remember
11/1/2005 7:08:11 PM
its funny, the majority of the shoplifters we picked up back when i used to work at best buy were indian. and by majority i mean we had at least 1 a week
11/1/2005 7:08:19 PM
^are you serious??
11/1/2005 7:09:05 PM
yes
11/1/2005 7:09:15 PM
11/1/2005 7:09:16 PM
that's news to me...I thought the Indians here were by and large well off...are you sure you didn't confuse some Pakistani/middle Eastern dude as being an Indian?
11/1/2005 7:09:39 PM
three-month deferred jail sentencedeferred or not its sitll jail time for something you claim cannot be given. and because A) his age and B) state not federal court he didn't have a worse sentence.^the bobbing of their parents heads when they came in to pick up the rif raf is unmistakable for inidan. sorry dude.[Edited on November 1, 2005 at 7:10 PM. Reason : fda]
11/1/2005 7:10:07 PM
^^^ eh, I wouldn't argue it, man. It was jail time as part of the sentence, even if it was suspended to go 'easy' on the kid.]
