You might want more RAM. 512 is ok for most applications now but if you plan on keeping the computerer for more then a year go with a gig or maybe even 2 gigs.
11/1/2005 3:15:50 PM
^^what could I get thats just as good for cheaper? This is exactly why I am trying to get some feedback. I really want to get a Vaio though.

Just to compare, I built this at Dell. It's comparable to what you're looking at, with a few minor differences (smaller HD, un-noticeably slower CPU). It's 779 dollars, and comes with a 17" LCD monitor:Dell Dimension E510 Series Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor 630 w/HT Technology (3.0GHz,800FSB)Operating System Microsoft® Windows® XP Media Center 2005 EditionMemory 512MB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 400MHz (2x256M)Keyboard Dell USB KeyboardMonitor 17 inch E173FP Analog Flat PanelVideo Card Integrated Intel® Graphics Media Accelator 950Hard Drive 160GB Serial ATA Hard Drive (7200RPM) w/DataBurst Cache™Floppy Drive and Media Reader No Floppy Drive IncludedMouse Dell® 2-button USB mouseNetwork Card Integrated Intel® PRO 10/100 EthernetModem 56K PCI Data Fax ModemAdobe Software Adobe® Acrobat® Reader 6.0CD ROM/DVD ROM Single Drive: 16X CD/DVD burner (DVD+/-RW) w/double layer write capabilitySound Integrated Audio with Dolby Digital 7.1 capability

I have a Samsung Syncmaster 173P LCD monitor so I'm definitely not getting a new monitor with the computer.
11/1/2005 3:43:03 PM
I've heard a lot of people say that you really pay more than you should for these computers, but looking at the specs and the software that comes with them, I have to disagree. I really can't find anything this good that I would consider. Not to mention the fact that I'm a big sony fan to begin with.
11/1/2005 3:45:51 PM
buy whatever you likewho caresit's gonna be obsolete in a year anyway
11/1/2005 3:47:02 PM
you def pay a lot more than you should for most computers through a manufacturer but yea i mean get whoever you like. but if that dell is very similar to the sony and LESS and comes with the 17" lcd, heck you could sell the lcd if you wanted.
11/1/2005 3:50:19 PM
well that Dell only has 512MB RAM. I think I'm going to go with 1gig because I would like to use this computer for at least 3 years, and it still be somewhat up to date. The software on the Sony's is another big selling point for me.
11/1/2005 4:00:34 PM
you're a n00b
11/1/2005 4:07:59 PM
Are you just going to be typing papers and web surfing? Cuz 512 is fine for that.
11/1/2005 4:19:21 PM
^and as far as the software goes?
11/1/2005 4:22:37 PM
right now I'm just trying to compare it with Dells and Gateways. Is there any other brand you people think i should look at?
11/1/2005 7:28:50 PM
emachines if you're just typing and browsing
11/2/2005 10:08:54 AM
emachines, dell, or even gateway. but if u wanna have some fun, build ur own.
11/2/2005 10:34:38 AM
Buy the parts off the internet and pay someone to put it together, you will get a much better computer, for a better price.

Thats what I did with the computer I have now, I had somebody build it. The only thing I don't like about that is the fact that there is no customer support, warranties, etc. Each time I've had a problem with this computer its been more of a hassle than I really want to deal with.
11/2/2005 3:15:45 PM
Well I've finalized my decision.http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/eCS/Store/en/-/USD/SY_BrowseCatalog-Start?CategoryName=cpu_rcseriesdesktops&Dept=computers[Edited on November 11, 2005 at 8:08 PM. Reason : ']

well thats one of the cool features, but it is capable of just about any kind of computer use.
11/11/2005 8:14:01 PM
you're wasting your money. sony desktops suck.
11/11/2005 8:21:51 PM
he's finalized his decision, dude.lay off.lol
11/11/2005 8:22:32 PM
^^why? What would you suggest?
11/11/2005 8:53:12 PM
the suggestions have already been made. you chose not to follow any of them.
11/11/2005 8:54:57 PM
just none that were convincing. I wish somebody could make a convincing argument against them instead of promoting other brands, or building my own. Aside from the $, nobody has actually said that anything is wrong with them.
11/11/2005 9:01:30 PM
money is usually the biggest argument.if money isn't an issue, you can buy whatever you fucking want without consulting a message board of course.
11/11/2005 9:02:27 PM
I really just consulted the message board because I figured a lot of the people that post in this message board know more about computers than I do. Maybe somebody has one of these computers and is unhappy with it, or maybe they're happy with it. Just trying to do as much research as I can before I spend $1300.
11/11/2005 9:09:44 PM
I'm not sure if it expired yet, but there is a coupon for dell where you get $200 off when you spend over $899 on a desktop. I just bought a computer with the same setup as that sony for $795 (after taxes and shipping) except mine had a 19" lcd and wireless mouse/keyboard included.
11/13/2005 11:01:01 AM
Dude, have you heard anybody on here support you buying a Sony desktop? No.Monitor http://www.slickdeals.net/ for a deal on a Dell computer and get that. You'll probably pay half as much and get a new LCD monitor to boot. You can then pay a little bit more and use your two monitors at the same time for several hundred less than that Sony piece.
