Just heard it on the BBC myself.I know a couple of us called it in the first Miers thread. Sacrificial lamb...I'm guessing next up will be minority, previous judge, outspoken conservative and the confirmation will happen very quickly.Ok actually here's what I posted the first time around, within a week of her announcement as a nominee

10/27/2005 9:20:36 AM
OF COURSE it was their plan all alongdo you really think they expected this to work? jesus, it's so freaking obviousnow, whoever he picks next will be semi-qualified and will be taken in with open arms. god dammit.
10/27/2005 9:28:33 AM
This is good newsNow Bush needs to find the most qualified person out there rather than using christianity, abortion and gender as litmus tests.
10/27/2005 9:29:39 AM
10/27/2005 9:30:29 AM
and yes, it IS quite convenient that she withdrew on the day indictments were expectedSURELY that's only coincidence
10/27/2005 9:35:32 AM

10/27/2005 10:24:07 AM
All he did was pick someone like himself
10/27/2005 10:36:31 AM
Ok Conservatives... Let's get Judge Edith Jones and Alberto Gonzalez warming up in the bull-pen.And let's get those silos open on the nuclear option.
10/27/2005 10:53:43 AM
Judge Joe Brown for SC!
10/27/2005 11:43:57 AM

funny how they will blame it on the conflict with the prez and confidentiality of the things she wrote
10/27/2005 1:02:55 PM
10/27/2005 1:22:19 PM
I don't know if I would say this was planned all along. If it was, then it didn't come out so hot. Bush has hard-core conservatives against him now. Either this is one huge conspiracy or Bush just keeps fucking up.
10/27/2005 1:40:04 PM
We all knew this was going down hill on the second day... Maybe he will pick someone... ah... qualified or somthing...
10/27/2005 1:57:45 PM
I'm honestly wondering who's going to be tapped next. Specifically, will Bush look to the bench this time?As far as conspiratorial timing of the story, I'm not convinced. After all, the stories that predate the Leak indictments are going to be bumped off the front page as soon as any indictments become public--even if it is on a Friday. It'd make more sense from a damage control perspective to wait until after the indictments come out to withdraw Miers. And no, I don't think Bush was planning this all along. I posted that more as an 'out,' albeit tongue-in-cheek, for conservatives who otherwise may not be able to articulate a response. I was a little surprised to hear the idea seriously suggested by coworkers this morning.

10/27/2005 6:07:32 PM
Agreed. Bush took the damage and didn't accomplish what he wanted. How could it be a plan?
10/27/2005 6:26:26 PM
I think there's still a chance for a moderate choice.
10/27/2005 6:39:43 PM
I don't know what to think ... It was comforting to know that the conservatives hated her ... the question is who comes in now ...
10/27/2005 8:56:28 PM
She turned out to be a bad nominee. Thankfully the weakly restated democratic talking points that permeate this thread are the voices of the usual discontent and banter that is expected when you're in the minority and out of power. Don't think for a minute that your defeated elected cronies have even an ounce of power to stop another real conservative from making the bench.
10/27/2005 9:57:52 PM
conservative action is persecuted and hindered by liberals conspiracy one momentyet all-powerful and dominant the next
10/27/2005 10:05:11 PM
^^ There isn't gonna be a "strong" conservative nominee. That would mean for Bush to demonstrate his weakness. "First I nominated the girl next door cuz she likes me, then I got my ass whooped and had to reconsider." There ain't a chance he's gonna allow that. Then again I was positive Miers would get confirmed. I think they'll find a moderate on the conservative side who the base will have no choice but embrace.
10/27/2005 10:50:57 PM
You guys don't get it. Harry Reid was the one who suggested to Bush that he nominate Miers, and look what happened. The Republicans were fighting among themselves while the Democrats watched and were laughing up their collective sleeve. It's basic divide and conquer.[Edited on October 27, 2005 at 11:41 PM. Reason : It was especially effective as the nomination came on the heels of Katrina and cronyism.]
10/27/2005 11:38:27 PM
10/28/2005 7:57:30 AM
^^ Yeah, the traditional Democratic allies finally got smart and realized that if they just shut up, the Republicans would rip themselves apart. I'm hoping that this is a sign that the Democratic Party is finally instilling some discipline among its ranks and supporters.
10/28/2005 12:22:55 PM
The Miers nomination was one that was picked, in my opinion, from a position of weakness when Bush didn't have to go down that road. Conservatives got Bush elected for the very purpose of changing the current activist dictatorship that is being currently legislated from the bench. Miers' nomination made little sense because there are plenty of qualified justices that have demonstrated the fortitude to stick to a strict constitutionalist viewpoint.
10/28/2005 11:44:51 PM
A nomination that does not make sense from the point of view of the base does not mean weakness. If anything it actually implies a willingness to go against the core supporters which is, well... either stupidity or strength. Personally, I'd prefer a more prominent conservative judge. But I don't see how Bush could deliver that without turning himself into a complete laughing matter. Oh, wait...
10/29/2005 10:14:49 AM
She withdrew do to the strategery of the subliminable nucular threat.
