because this is what the ipod shuffle should have been

but no, they were too cheap and wanted to up their profits by marketing the fact that not having an LCD is cool...

dumb name, but at least it has a screen and an FM tuner and for the same price as an ipod shuffle.

and because they wanted to cover up this:
http://news.com.com/Suit+filed+over+Nano+scratches/2100-1047_3-5906399.html?tag=nefd.top
by telling consumers they should buy a case, when it's obviously a design flaw

no, it's a thread about how people are sucked in by apple's marketing to believe whatever they dish out and think it's the hottest product on the market.

i'm merely pointing out that dell has added two major features that apple left out and imho it's far superior of a product especially considering the price is the same...

it's more like the zen nano plus than the nomad muvo

only product of dell i like is my 24" widescreen ultrasharp monitor. that is all.

And personally i don't put stock in commercials of any kind. I mean look at dell, their commercials are all focused around celeron POS. Apples advertising had 0 influence on me when i bought my ipod. It was more of a "hey whats this thing? ooooh nice, thats a neat looking mp3 player. I think i'll buy it and see how well it functions" ....1 month later..."happy i bought that ipod...best mp3 player i've owned" ....9 months later "damn, this ipod is even better than i thought. goes great with my new headunit"

I deal with Dells all day long and it is amazing how uninspired and badly designed a lot of their shit is. I can't understand how such crap can be so popular.

yeah, we had more dells than anything else. And they are a pain in the ass to take apart sometimes. The worst is the 'slim' case design that opens up in-half so you can work on it. They tried taking the G4's design and fubared it

^ yes ...

Most of their designs are badly laid out and very difficult to work in. They all look like off-shelf components crammed anywhere they will fit.

Apple wins out because they beat everyone else to the market with their product. I bought a shuffle in January because it was the only product at the time that met my needs for a portable mp3 player.

Had the dell thing up there been out, i probably woulda bought it instead, being that it's the same price and has an FM tuner. But unfortunately, that's what happens when you're a Johnny-come-lately.

^i would agree with that as well... but i just can't buy into the "life is random, so is your music" slogan or whatever it is, pure marketing to get around a design 'practicality' flaw

i wasn't promoting the dell as much as i was putting the ipod shuffle down, look at every single other player out there that is in the same market as the shuffle, they all have screens and most of them have an FM tuner, and no the ipod shuffle wasn't the first one on the market... they are just the first one's to put it in a small case and charge a large premium for it...

not to mention the, "everyone has one so i have to have one as well" philosophy

The Shuffle is lame, I agree. It's the cheapest for the size though.

You are even more lame for creating this thread, however.

I love Apple though because they are the only company that would dedicate most of their front page to an American hero: http://www.apple.com/

that makes no sense, in one post you've managed to say i don't have the freedom to speech and to have my own opinion, and at the same time promoting someone who fought for freedom and equality.

this is merely an opinion, take it or leave it, i'm just sick of people hurling themselves on the apple bandwagon because they can't think for themselves...

though i would agree with the fact that apple is a very humanitarian friendly company

Your opinion that the Shuffle is lame is valid, and one I agree with. Your hatred for Apple is lame, and the fact you created a thread to express it is even more lame. I'm not impugning your right of "free speech" ( ), i'm just saying you are LAME for expressing it in the way that you did. Plus, it's stupid to hate an entire company because you don't like one of their products. Of all the hate-able companies out there, Apple should be low on anyone's list.

Also, i've been an Apple since at least 1991, so I am not hopping on any bandwagon. When the first iPod came out (if you're not a Mac user, you probably wouldn't know about it, but it had a mechanical scroll-wheel and a more boxy design), I thought it was lame then... "who cares about a stupid mp3 player," I thought... boy was I wrong (and it's a good thing too).

moron, there's a difference between hating the company apple and hating the brand of apple, the apple design (mostly) and company is great, the brand and everything it stands for in society is what i hate, they've (read:society) taken a design icon and made it into a status icon, it's to the point in which society doesn't even think any more they just assume everything apple is of high worth... and in the case of the ipod shuffle and flawed nano, it's absolutly not.

though i am upset at apple the company for the nano cover up and poor design of ipod shuffle...

moron i wasn't referring to you earlier, but there are a lot of people that do jump on the bandwagon and there are a lot of apple patriots out there that have been with apple a long time and figure that anything they dish out is the best thing since sliced bread, but just like any company, it has a couple hiccups, it's how you deal with those hiccups is what matters...

What Nano cover up are you referring to, btw?

The mp3 player market was stagnant before the iPod. Apple released a great mp3 player in to a market that was already established (before the iPod, i liked a lot of iRiver's stuff-- and still do), and rose to the top. People obviously saw something in the iPod that other players lacked (and still lack), which is a simple, appealing design with a simple interface (1 scroll wheel, 4 buttons). It's because of this reason the iPod remains so successful. Other players outclass the iPod for extraneous features, but none outclass it for ease-of-use or looks, which is what most consumers look for. The fringe end of consumers who love Windows, and like to tweak their computers (the kind of people to buy an iRiver, and replace the firmware...) are not going to like the iPod. Apple can't cater to everyone, and they don't.

If any company made an mp3 player skinnier than a #2 pencil, have a black shiny surface, and have an easy to use scroll weel + 4 buttons I would be all over it. a lot of what apple does isn't necessarily innovative--it just takes a little bit from different companies, and puts it together to make an attractive product. Kind of like how Bungie succeeded with the Halo franchise by not necessarily innovating elements but just taking the best parts of other games and creating a high polished, high refined product

equating halo to the ipod is actually a fantastic comparison

neither are innovative and both are overrated.

the iPod's success is pure marketing combined with apple fanboi hype

Halo is based off of Bungies prior work Marathon, a mac only FPS. Microsoft bought bungie and bungie releases HALO.

well, I don't think that is the gist.

for example, speaking of speakers, Bose is pretty popular.

They are making good money.

You don't see any other "better" speaker manufacturers making that kind of cash.

And yet, everyone keeps saying Bose products suck.

Bose speakers do suck. they are cheaply made and only sound good to an untrained ear. if you turn the bass up and play something loud, a lot of people get impressed.

i don't like the ipod, but not because it is a poorly made product. even the problems with scratching i'm sure are not because apple was trying to save a few bucks. i just agree that they are too much of a status symbol. there are better products out there, but everyone just wants the ipod because it's cool.

Quote :

this is dumb, the whole mp3 scene was pretty new not long before the ipod. it was a new idea to have an mp3 player.

and my girlfriend owns a 1G ipod and an ipod photo, i've used both and i think they are fine products, but she does artistic stuff for a living and has long used a mac, way before the ipod.

the shuffle blows.

I won a free 512 mb one at a trade show and gave it to my gf because she didn't have any portable MP3 player at the time.

Thing is, I had to install iTunes on my computer to make it work, and having to deal with that shitty piece of shit fucking crap software is worth every inch of wrath I can lay upon Apple. I've never been an Apple fan, and the shuffle just justified my feelings.

In short, here's why: (Comparing to my personal music solution)
I don't need to convert my songs to add them to my Treo/SD card. I don't have to use iTunes. I can add DRM music to my treo, can't do it on the shuffle. On top of that, the speed of transferring the music to the SD card is SO MUCH faster than the shuffle.

So what you're saying is that, to me (an untrained ear (who really can't hear all that great in the first place)), Bose speakers are 100% fine. Perfectly reasonable. If I can't tell the difference between Bose and [betterbrand], then what difference does it make which one I buy?

if you think something that sounds bad sounds good to you, that's fine... but i wouldn't go around saying they're great sounding speakers. if you're buying them for their looks, then i guess it doesn't much matter how they sound.
