It decreases the drag caused by wind. By 13% or something like that. Usually 2 or 3 MPG increase when dropped. Ideally, the tailgate would be half way down instead of all the way open or closed.

i still get 11.5 mpg whether my tailgate is up down, bed is empty or has 1000# in it, driving around town or on the interstate, it flat out sucks, but it sucks consistantly
