i'm trying to transfer files from my laptop to my new desktop, so i got a crossover cable and made sure the files i'm trying to get are shared. for some reason though, the desktop is only picking up a few folders that contain like 2 files each. can someone just explain this is layman's terms?

xp, i assume? i can't remember if this was my problem a long time ago when i was trying to do this (before i broke down and bought a cheap router), but you might need to have netbeui enabled

also, make sure they're in the same workgroup

Use the XP Home Networking Wizard...should make it work. Basically both computers have to be on the same subnet...their IP's should be something like:

Computer 1: IP - 192.168.0.1 Subnet - 255.255.255.0
Computer 2: IP - 192.168.0.2 Subnet - 255.255.255.0

***NOT those exactly, but those are examples to show you what I mean by in the same subnet.

Go to
Start Menu
Programs
Accessories
Communications
New Connection Wizard

set it up to connect directly to another computer using the Ethernet Card (it will ask you what device you want to connect with, dont choose modem, choose Ethernet Card a.k.a NIC a.k.a Network Card a.k.a TCP/IP)

if that doesnt work, just use the Network Setup Wizard like the other person was telling you and it will show you pictures of the situation that you have setup.... EXAMINE the diagrams closely.....you really should get a hub they're cheap and easy to use!!!!

good luck

I'm trying to do the same thing from my old shitty laptop with no screen to my new desktop. So the best solution is a router or hub to just network the two? Because a crossover is 26 dollars. Can you not hook the two up using the old style printer cables or something else?
