Some old timer told me one time that taking a bare block and leaving it outside to rust for a year before totally cleaning it/machine work would actually make it stronger.

back in the day they used to burry engines in the ground to strengthen the steel. Call it seasoning. but I only like my seasoning on my chicken. but yes. it's better to machine a block if it's got some age or miles on it first.
