...at the City's Board of Adjustment meeting on Monday?I just found out the Chairman and his wife had a baby...so I'm running the show

Adjust the shit out of everybody.
10/5/2005 9:26:19 PM
what do you adjust?

It's mostly variance requests to the zoning ordinances, but we also hear applications for Special Use Permits and some other cases. We basically serve as the City's judicial branch. I'd post the official link but the City uses huge URLs (go to http://www.raleighnc.gov/, click on Government, then "Boards & Commissions")I've been on there for almost 2 years now, never had to actually run the thing. I could use some cheerleaders [Edited on October 5, 2005 at 10:22 PM. Reason : ---]

Can we make banners and paint our faces?I can think of at least one specific banner that would have to be in attendance...
10/5/2005 10:27:18 PM
^I'm afraid to ask but yes, banners and face paint would definitely be a much-appreciated change of scenery

TGD: W is going down!!1
10/5/2005 11:44:43 PM
yeah raleigh's website is ass now since they revamped it last year

^^lol I've got to wonder how that would turn out if I ever decide to run for office...I can see a reporter somewhere unearthing TWW archives 20 years from now. "Isn't it true that you once moonlighted on an internet forum under the alias TGD? And isn't it also true that under that alias you actively campaigned for the defeat of George W. Bush?" etc

If there's any way you can use your newly found awesome powers to fuck with my landlord, I'll be there with bells on. Otherwise, you and your board are useless to me.
10/6/2005 5:18:51 PM
^We can only fuck with your landlord if he ever applies for a variance or special use permit (in which case you'd get an opportunity to speak anyhow). Sorry We're essentially the City's judicial branch for interpreting the zoning regulations, so we don't get to go out and unilaterally fuck with people.[Edited on October 10, 2005 at 4:10 PM. Hey can you approve an ordinance to make my street a "mow your goddamned yard" zone?
10/10/2005 5:56:34 PM
We don't write the ordinances, just interpret them. How bad is the lawn situation on your street? The City Council already has ordinances on the books for property maintenance, so you can give the Inspections Department a call and have them check it out. Or pm me the address of one of the unmaintained properties and I can call over there tomorrow.[Edited on October 10, 2005 at 6:31 PM. Reason : ---]

eh I was just kidding, I live in Cary so there probably isn't anything you could do anyway. The houses on both side of us are rentals as well as the house across the street. One side doesn't have any tenants right now so it is overgrown. Even when people lived there they never mowed. It got so bad one day I was mowing my yard and kept going and ended up mowing their entire front yard too. It's actually not too bad right now, just a bunch of weeds hanging over the sidewalk that attack your legs when you walk by. There are some houses much worse on one end of the street with briars and shit growing out so far you have to walk in the grass to get around them.

A self-described libertarian leaning Republican enforces zoning ordinances. Now I've seen it all.
10/10/2005 9:39:43 PM
I wasn't "enforcing zoning ordinances," I was just willing to help if Opstand had an issue (the Board of Adjustment doesn't "enforce zoning ordinances" either, it grants exceptions to the zoning ordinances). And although I don't like zoning ordinances, I'm not really into the whole "civil disobedience" thing when there are no civil liberties getting trampled. We're supposedly a nation of laws, remember? [Edited on October 10, 2005 at 9:57 PM. Reason : ---]
