I have a manual transmission and everytime I come to a stop the rpms go all the way to 0 and my car stalls out. Its gettin annoying to start my car up at every light, anyways it doesnt happen all the time, sometimes the rpms go barely above zero and my car just sputters when stopped. You have any ideas what may be wrong?

Sounds like an incomplete release situation. Several different issues can contribute to this: one is clutch hydraulics (master and slave cylinder)...may just need to be bled, or you may have a leak and have no fluid in the reservoir.

Another can be something lodged in the pressure plate diaphragm.

I can check it out for you if you wish. My prices are very reasonable.


Oh, and like Joel says, it could also be a throttle body/idle air bypass issue. Do you have problems putting the car in gear at stoplights with the engine running? You may also have an intake leak (false air) contributing to the problem.

have you been in any wrecks? possibly rolling down a hill onto the hood of another car? I was just thinking that if that happened, it might have something to do with the stalling

The z-24 cavalier I used to have did the same exact thing. It turned out to be my speedometer sensor. My computer had no idea how fast my car was going and therefore, stalled out almost everytime I put the clutch down while coming to a stop. I think it is about a $200 fix depending on the car.

needless to say, I just got used to it and trained myself to involuntarily tap the accelerator a little to keep it running...

I'm reasonably sure it is a mechanical speedo, but there may be a vss located in the speedometer housing, believe it or not. I don't think it would contribute to this problem, though. May be wrong, don't know without a factory manual (or at least Alldata).

can you actually feel the car dragging the engine down, or does it freewheel normally when you push in the clutch? also does keeping your foot on the gas slightly keep it from doing this? my guess would be idle air control problems, possibly gum and shit causing it to be slow to react

just a question here, but if it was a problem with the clutch, ie. not fully disengaging, wouldn't shifts feel abnormal through all the gears and not just show up as a problem when stopped?

you guys can say what you want to say, but it seems like a decent coincidence... you shouldn't rule out the speedo sensor, unless of course, you don't have one, then my suggestion obviously doesn't work. i don't know anything about pathfinders, but considering your car is having the same exact problem that my old one did a while back, it certainly is possible it is a similar problem...

Depends on how you drive. Most of us here have shifted without the clutch with no real noticeable difference. Matching gear speeds...
